Headed to DC, trip 1 of 2 this month. Worst security backlog I've seen at ONT in ages, but things finally moved. Should be on time.

TSA doing random secondary screenings at gate at IAH. More visible police presence here & at ONT. Do they suspect something in AF flight?

Oh, man, the eastern time zone just kicks my ass every single time.

Hey, thanks! Such nice thinks to say just when I was planning on tweeting my hotel restaurant versus room service dilemma...

DCA>IAH>ONT. Excellent trip, and great time spent at NEH, but happy to be headed home. $$Which has nothing to do with the Wii waiting there\.$$

I ordered that - it's waiting for me at home! I expect to be up all night...

Sitting here in IAH during a long layover just goofing off. And feeling guilty about it. That's an overdeveloped work ethic right there.

Am goofing around on the free wifi. I usually work really well on planes, since it's the one place no one can get ahold of me.

Have been taxiing from gate to runway for 30 min. At least 15 planes ahead of us still. Don't they know I have a Wii to get home to?

Hey, you'll never guess what I had waiting for me when I got home last night!

A Wii! If only someone could invent a package that translates Wii usage into writing productivity. Maybe using the balance board.

Zelda, Super Mario Galaxy, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Okami, and Wii Fit. Will get World of Goo soon!

A puzzle: when I bought dig. camera, it came with a tiny SD card; bought a larger one & swapped out. Extra SD card now nowhere to be found.

Vaguely remembering buying some other device that needed an SD card, and recycling - but what device? Completely baffled.

The good news: SD cards now insanely cheap.

Wow, that's very cool. I was just thinking storage, but I'll keep this in mind for the next camera!

Want to make some kind of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind joke. Instead I'll just wonder if the iPhone/rice trick wd work.

Do not feel like working. Does my massively sore throat justify spending the rest of the day playing?

Whatever amusement value this cold may have held has long since worn off. Knock it off, sinuses; I have thinking to do.

Oh, and PS: I live on the edge of the desert. It has rained every day for a week. In June. I'm not complaining but it does raise questions.

Indeed! The Newton: a technology whose time has $$finally$$ come.

Tethering is built into iPhone 3.0, so usable with any updated iPhone.

True, but the MacRumors guys took that as a "not yet" rather than a "not." I'm hoping for sooner rather than later.

Well, crap. I guess I chose to hear it in both cases. That's what good optimism does me.

Whoa.

RT @noradio: "Existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade...price with a new two-year agreement is $499 $$8GB$$,$599 $$16GB$$, or $699 $$32GB$$." As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-yr commitment &$18 upgrade fee...

...You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 01/16/2010." Hmph.

No surprise that "as a valued AT&T customer" is a dangling clause. Somebody really needs a primer on the definition of "to value."

PS: I also love the "discounted upgrade at higher price" versus "full discount on standard upgrade."

I think 18 months is the charm...

RT @mediacommons: Media studies folks: Have a great blog? Or know of one? We'd like to include it in "In Syndication." Contact for more info

Horrible disgusting cold seems to be well along on the snot-to-phlegm transition. TMI, no doubt, but it's cause for celebration on my end.

In the last 5 min: I figured out what the chapter I'm writing is about. And then realized that's what the entire book is about. Head rush!

I now owe @mkirschenbaum dinner. Thanks for inadvertently helping me figure it out!

Very much look forward to smashing crabs! Fear this realization may change my @dh09 pres a bit, tho. Okay, deep breath...

@JenServenti Not as bitter as my former student who just found out the newest Real World house is a block from her apartment, I'd wager. :)

Oh, hey. I read the first one! See, if you guys had had "dorm rooms like palaces," you might have been featured, too.

Dowdy like PALACES, you mean.

Just to let you know, the grand what's-it-all-about revelation has now resulted in 5 pages of awesome new text. In case you were wondering.

Insofar as I am surprised, it is only pleasantly so, at the sudden ease. Nice to remember how much fun writing can be.

Will do! $$And thanks for the cheers \- I can use them\.$$

Excited for everyone involved in @infinitesummer. Having just emerged from InfiniteSpringDoublePlus, I'm cheering from the sidelines.

Crud. Was going to include link to last semester's class $$http://bit\.ly/DmRFV$$ in last tweet, but hosting provider has hosed WPmu.

plannedobsolescence.net is hosted @Dreamhost & is fit & fine! machines.pomona.edu is, alas, not, not, and not.

Okay, InfiniteSpring is now once again available $$http://bit\.ly/DmRFV$$ for your @infinitesummer perusal. Turns out to have been hacked. Grr.

Have 6.5 page introduction to new chapter. Also have lots of research to do for rest of chapter. But man it feels good to be writing again!

Not off the top of my head - can you give me more info? Title/journal/full author name?

Sadly, no. Her upkeep is both labor- and time-intensive.

Just finished widgetizing the blog theme. Now to break everything again by upgrading to WP 2.8.

Wow. I've had Twitter Tools running in my WP install tho posts are turned off. Just found *all* my tweets in my WP db. Effortless archiving!

Okay, operation update-all-the-web-software-to-discourage-the-butthead-miscreants is complete. I guess I have to go back to real work now.

A bit of research accomplished. Annual report draft completed. Big pot of gumbo on the stove. Not a bad Saturday, on the whole.

Yes - my #wordpress 2.8 is without timezone support as well. A puzzlement.

I did automatic update; I wonder if that's the culprit. #wordpress

Could be. I'll try turning off plugins one at a time and see if that's it. But my settings appear exactly as in 2.7...

...which makes me think it's something that failed to auto-update.

Oh, hey - just spotted a forum issue that sounds like yours: http://bit.ly/l9FVx - no answer yet, but something not right there.

That's no good! Figured out my problem: timezone support requires PHP5.2, which my host claims to be running, but isn't...

Okay, forced an upgrade to PHP5.2, and timezone support now appears as advertised. I hope your issues work out!

The @DreamHost settings panel thought it was running 5.2.x. I hit "submit" as if I had changed settings, which somehow did it.

Probably if yours claims 5.2.9, it's really running. You might try this test, tho: http://bit.ly/2UnIC6

New blog post: Ambivalence http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/ambivalence/

Indeed! $$God, was that class ten years ago?\!? Time flies\.$$

The strangest [almost] sequence of tweets I've gotten, as follows:

$$1$$ RT @wmrandth: Anyone know this film name? Plot is: man comes from South America & works as janitor in LA, then becomes succesful teacher

followed by $$2$$ RT @mikhailg: Criterion Collection edition of Videodrome. Want.

Brain just exploded.

Thanks - I was wondering where that landed. :)

One of the best things about making gumbo? Leftovers. Truly a better-the-second-day food.

Congratulations!

Spent all morning on project find-hacks-and-patch-holes. I think I've finally got them; the flood of spam-driven inbound links has stopped.

HEY. I resemble that remark!

Hey - anybody have a sample @scholarpress courseware site I can peek at? Would like to see it in action!

New blog post: And Then This Week http://bit.ly/ZJ93t

In the last few mins, folks in NYC, Auckland, and Amsterdam have found my teaching site by googling "hypermediation." Is something up?

My flt to DCA tmw gets in at 5pm; Metro to UMD abt 6pm; then cab to Marriott. Prob too late for LM talk, but hope to make reception. #dh09

Wow. That's ambitious. Are you using a mail client that can help? Will look forward to hearing how it turns out.

Updating all the portable devices for the trip. Next: prepare house for departure, reserve cab, pack. Digital first, analog after. :) #dh09

Just... wow. RT @ErikaJL: Buffy FTW!!! http://bit.ly/px9YI "Buffy Shuts Down Edward Cullen In The Best Clip Ever" #btvs #twilight

At the airport and through security by 4.45 am. This is the only thing I hate about living on the west coast.

Okay, slept on the first flight; need to work on this one. Either that or I'll be finishing my presentation in the hotel room tonight. #dh09

okay, I'm here, but killed my battery on the plane. must go in search of power outlet. #dh09

Yay, Matt! @mkirschenbaum with last info & intro before Manovich plenary. #dh09

That's not hard for me to understand, but it might be worth a second look...

And *that* I understand even better, I assure you. :)

Stupid jetlag: after 3.5hrs sleep night b4 last, up until 2am, completely overslept & missed 1st panel. Happily, it got good coverage! #dh09

In #dh09 panel, "Supporting the DH"; presentation from Steven Krauwer on CLARIN & ways the project could fail - not always expected ways.

Keep getting kicked off network - not wireless, but authentication. What gives?

Potentials for failure: lack of agreement on standards, lack of financial support, ignoring content evolution #dh09

And the key ingredient is STANDARDS. #dh09

Chad Kainz: in DH projects, 1/3 time spent on scholarship, 2/3 spent on technology - how to bring resources together to shift balance? #dh09

Curious whether there are other small liberal arts college folks at #dh09; will confess to having serious R1 envy now. I want a DH center!

@fraistat on building network of DH centers; good thinking about making it inclusive, but what about smaller institutions w/o ctrs? #dh09

Good to know - thanks! #dh09

I want to find ways to foster partnerships between such smaller institutions that can't found ctrs and existing DH ctrs #dh09

We'll have to meet up! Would love to hear what you're doing...

I hope to apply for one of these for 2010-11, but need the partnership in place, as app has to originate with center, no? #dh09

Absolutely! Let's find a time to get together once I'm back in SoCal; would love to hear what you're working on. #dh09

Grr. RT @profhood The college of 2020? http://bit.ly/Mm8yF Want full report? \$75 for 50pp "paper" digital report. Fail. http://bit.ly/17179k

About to present on the future of the university press in the Jimenez room. #dh09

Thanks! Laptop's Internet connex has failed so will have to catch up once I can get back on. iPhone too unwieldy! #dh09

Anybody other than me lose their Internet connection? Got kicked off and can't get back on. Was it something I said? #dh09

Hey, thanks for that! Great pres, by the way - definitely want to talk Drupal with you..

Man, what a day. Crashing now, so that I might actually make the 9 am session tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Critical Code Studies/Software Studies about to begin in the Carroll room. #dh09

Super-cool wordle cloud of yesterday's #dh09 tweets by @jawalsh: http://bit.ly/u7fZs

New blog post: The Hybrid Future of the University Press http://bit.ly/18Ws1t

I'm sorry you're not here too, Cathy! Thanks for the RT, and hope to cross paths with you soon.

it's a common issue in media studies: you know how to read, but you read differently if you've had to make sthg #dh09

Gah! Again, have lost Internet connex; today, no combo of cache clearing, DHCP lease renewing, or machine rebooting will get it back. Grrr.

Hmm. Switching networks $$to one we're not supposed to be using$$ did it. My laptop has gone rogue.

It's due to the press in Aug; print will take a while, but there'll be a CommentPress version soon! #dh09

Hey, so who's smashing crabs with me? #dh09

Woo-hoo! Congrats, and well deserved!

in defense of the code studies folks: they didn't say that; only made one off-hand joke about *not* needing to be a coder!

The rest all came from folks not in the room, who picked up on a second-hand report of the joke.

Kretzschmar: library as only realistic option for long-term sustainability of large DH projects in university setting. #dh09

$$Though I'd push again for press/library/IT center collaborations around such projects\!$$ #dh09

Hmmm. Let me ponder and get back to you. :) #dh09

Where they're so obviously allied with a disc. society, absolutely! Reliance on any single institution makes me nervous... #dh09

...The qs raised about retirement/death of PI, etc, seem exactly right. When should projects have independent external URI/hosting? #dh09

Hitting the wall - could really use a nap, but today's a packed day. Suspect I'll collapse early tonight.

One of the best things I've done as a prof was introduce Cronkite as our commencement speaker in 2004. Sending my thoughts to his family.

The plan: mtg here in MD tomorrow at 2; then metro to ViennaMU, cab to Hampton Inn. Any #thatcamp-ers headed to Auld Shebeen around 6?

That's Vienna/GMU, of course, not multi-user Vienna - though the idea's an interesting one. #thatcamp

I'm staying there too - on the metro now & will be in shortly. Have to miss meetup, alas; it's at Auld Shebeen.

How ling do you think you'll be there? About to head out from DC...

@digitalhumanist By which I meant to ask how LONG you'll be there, but couldn't correct before entering the metro blackout zone.

So where are you at this point? Almost to Fairfax & trying to decide where to have the cab take me...

You are not kidding.

Ugh. So Chain Bridge Rd & !??

Dunno how I managed to reply myself. Will hope to see you there.

Fab dinner tonight in the 1950s version of the future, w/ @GeorgeOnline, @jbj, @briancroxall, & @alxjrvs. Looking fwd to tomorrow! #thatcamp

At GMU, awaiting the start of #thatcamp. Amazing to see so many great folks here!

Very sorry you're not here, too! #thatcamp

No self-aggrandisement: no reading papers that say "here's how smart I am"; no questions after that say "here's how dumb you are."

Most brilliant part so far: very short lunchtime demos; at 3 mins, you get played off by keyboard cat.

Was too anxious abt time to be clear, so will reiterate: we're actively seeking contributions @mediacommons http://bit.ly/17K3VV #thatcamp

Really want to know what theme your Drupal e-lit class is using, @zachwhalen - very nice! #thatcamp

because much of that group is housed in other depts $$German, English, etc$$ despite studying media objects? #thatcamp

True - but it's also necessary to say you're DH if you study new media because non-DH grantors haven't funded it in past. #thatcamp

Thanks! I really want to poke at your set-up more; you've built great content types and views; very exciting. #thatcamp

At DCA awaiting my flight home from #dh09 and #thatcamp. It's been an amazing week but I look forward to being home so I can process it all!

I did, mostly just sharing my workflow and organizational/searching strategies, which are pretty simple. It's a great product!

Hey, have I got a book project for you! http://bit.ly/C5zdR - ms hopefully available by early fall.

Thanks so much! Once the project's out $$also in trad\. print format for provost/dean\-gifting$$ I plan on putting together a roadshow.

There are a very few who are starting to get it, but yes, there's an overwhelming reluctance to change there.

@sramsay Glad they're being forced to hear the "change or die" message. Here's hoping the former happens before the latter.

Hey, good luck with that. If it works, let me know how you pulled it off. I've mostly kept my bomb-tossing confined to conferences.

Pretty much done unpacking the new office. For a basement, it's pretty flash. http://yfrog.com/0t57881378j

Office view #2. http://yfrog.com/0ypovj

Office view #3. Note the fire alarm; used to be a classroom. I do not eagerly await the first fire drill. http://yfrog.com/15w5oj

~@jmittell It's unbecoming, I admit. But the previous office was off the charts gorgeous. I'm happy this one is starting to feel like home.

I'm sure we can arrange something.

Well, now that you've posted this it's clouded over, but yeah. We're actually only half-underground, which makes it much better.

We all deserve such an office! I'm just lucky that my former chair defended the building so fiercely during the last renovation.

Don't give them any ideas!

Do they include "at hard labor" in sentences anymore? If there were ever a case that deserved it...

Heh. Happily, it's not that basement, despite the allure of bar proximity. I just moved two floors downstairs.

Thanks! I look forward to testing the couch out soon.
