I got mine a couple of weeks ago; took it to Norway with me. Super convenient!

I'd pre-ordered from Amazon - I can't imagine it wouldn't be shipping from Kensington!

The air here is filled with fine ash - 30 miles from the fires.

Just asked by dean's office whether a post on a serious academic blog should be included among faculty publications. I'm so proud. #headway

By my estimation $$a rough one fer sure$$, one primarily focused on the field or other professional concerns of the author$$s$$.

@alechosterman My dean doesn't; I was presented with a specific case that happened to be a serious academic blog.

Sure, though the question here was about a cv-level inclusion of a specific blog post as comparable to an article.

I hope you & all the other east coasters will forgive me if I say I don't want to hear about it? [1/2]

Forecast has been only 3 more days over 100 for 8 days now. Was 109 on Saturday; a mere 100 today. With a light rain of ash.

Wow, that sounded pissy. Wasn't going for pissy, but for "la la la, I can't hear you!" $$I blame the heat & smoke for my irritableness\.$$

Don't worry about me - we're 20 miles from the nearest fire - but the smoke has permeated the area & apparently made me whiny. :)

Hey, you write about movies, they sell machines on which you can watch movies. What's not to love?

Looked up thinking, how long until noon meeting? Answer: 24 minutes. And I was still at home in pajamas. Showered & out the door in 13 mins.

Which is to say, I rock.

Hey, cool! I'd absolutely dig it...

I stayed there last time it was in Philly, and it was great. The only downside was having to carry a coat around.

Ooh, I should have sent you an invitation - we'd both get extra space free.

Done!

I've been using Tweetie, which has been behaving fine in SL.

Coming right up!

Can't confirm that WPMU is affected, but can tell you that someone tried $$and failed$$ to get into my WPMU 2.8.4 admin user account.

In the spirit of belt&suspenders, I use Blackblaze and Dropbox: Bb for automatic remote backup; Db for syncing across machines.

If you want to test out Dropbox, let me know and I'll send you a referral. 2GB acct free, plus a little extra space for the ref.

New blog post: Ick http://bit.ly/JHQ5O

After a sleepless night spent coughing in LA, I coughed my way across the country and now hope to stop coughing long enough to sleep in NYC.

Which reminds me: dear fellow passengers on CO50 today: I swear it's a bronchial infection, not H1N1. You can all relax.

Better than I expected, thanks! Spent the morning in a series of mtgs at NYU & was sorry not to have time to pop in & say hi.

Hey, cool! How late do you think you'll be there? I've got a 6pm dinner, but if we're done early enough I'd love to swing by.

don't know if you're still at the bar - just wrapping up dinner in union sq, so would be abt 30 mins...

have a great one. since my last post I figured out I'm getting sicker, so I'm going to go crash. will try to catch you tmw.

Ugh. Sick. And feeling pretty whiny about it, actually.

Thank you! I could certainly use it.

Hope you guys had a great time last night. I collapsed & am feeling even rougher this am. Here's hoping for recovery today...

Day 1 of MLA Program Comm meeting was fabulous $$if with much coughing from me$$. Aside from wifi, anything you'd like to see at future conv?

You'll be happy to know that formal panels at night are ending! $$And everybody expects the interview aspect is on the decline$$

Video is a great idea, but I can imagine that with that many panels, it would be \$. Maybe we shd start grassroots flip mvmt.

Great idea! I hope there'll be more of that forthcoming.

Shameless self-promotion: I'm in Humanities Magazine this month, being questioned impertinently: http://bit.ly/fMXru

Oh, no! I'm so sorry to hear you're sick, too. Probably just as well I didn't make it; we would have just wheezed together.

WTF, AT&T? I've got 5 bars on 3G and all my calls are failing!

Lots of cool stuff coming - very exciting conversation today. Yay for a 21st century MLA!

Me too! Thanks for the visit, and I'll look forward to keeping you posted on our progress.

At the point of seriously hoping that my cough has turned into acute bronchitis and not pneumonia. :(

Got appt w/doc for Tues afternoon, but only by freaking out on the phone. Thank goodness we don't have socialized medicine!

Also starting to wonder whether it's irresponsible of me to try to teach Monday. It's not H1N1, but should I still keep my germs to myself?

I hope to spend tomorrow that way. And may whether I want to or not.

energy level is near zero. I'm going to spend today pondering alternatives from a prone position.

Okay, still with the cough and the shortness of breath, and now low-grade fever and abdominal cramps? I guess it's time for urgent care.

I've got a call in; waiting for a reply. Thank goodness we don't have to deal with all that rationing that you guys put up with. :P

On-call dr says go to urgent care/er. Now to figure out which one will actually take my insurance. *sigh*

I think it's me & one other dude in the urgent care. Slightly creepy it's so quiet. Through initial screening & waiting on the doc.

I'll only tweet long enough so that someone knows I'm there.

And I'm out. Xray shows no pneumonia, but acute bronchitis. And PA thinks I may have H1N1 too. Nice. Scrip for zpak & codeine. Back to bed.

PS: I'll begin my official apologies to everyone I've come in contact with over the last three days shortly. Except whoever gave me this.

No kidding. Though there's a small part of me that's thinking, well, at least I'll have it over with...

FWIW, if this is H1N1, it sucks. I never run a fever - my temp is usually low if anything - and I'm now over 100. I hate this.

And am sorry to be whining to you poor people, but... well, here I am, and there you are.

Ugh, that's awful. Okay, I'm waving the white flag - serves as a convenient handkerchief besides! Here's hoping I'm up soon.

Perversely, that is precisely what I'm hoping for at this stage. Wish me luck!

Should know by Thurs at the latest, sooner if it's +. Have also been told I'll be contacted by "federal officials" if it's +.

So unless they drag me off to the camps, I'll let you all know as soon as I do.

Indeed! Net-based instruction, here I come.

Yes, the deadline's tomorrow. I think the app itself has gone in; your ltr can follow. No problem!

Sickbed update: sweated out the fever overnight; now back to my usual 98.2. Breathing better. Makes me think it's just bronchitis after all.

Go, zpack, go!

I'm hoping so, too - though I've got Skylight down for next Tuesday. Am I wrong?

Don't get me started on this. I have an essay coming out in a volume on teaching w/tech that introduces "weblogs" to lit profs

Wrote the essay, what, four years ago? Based on a class taught three years before that?

About to begin my first distance-ed experience - though not the way I might have expected it would happen.

Classes seem to have gone well. So grateful to my colleagues for all their help yesterday & today.

Gee, NBC4 is reporting that Jay Leno's first show was a "rousing success." I'm stunned. Thanks for the hard-hitting critical take.

Ah, it's NBC4 LA, conveniently located in Burbank. In the same complex as... hey...

Hey, lazytwitter: I need a WP plugin that will allow me to see comments by user, like the user page allows you to see posts by user. Ideas?

Wow - that *is* cool! #zotero

@zotero 2b7 Mac is gorgeous- but a sync error: Component returned failure code: 0x804b000a $$NS\_ERROR\_MALFORMED\_URI$$ [nsIXMLHttpRequest.open]

Aha! Thank you!

@inactinique Also, the update deleted my WebDAV settings for attachment backup; had to reinstate those. #zotero

Interesting - I wonder why my WebDAV settings disappeared. Anyhow, all seems to be working now.

Good grief, but I feel terrible. I keep feeling like I'm getting over this thing, but every time I think I'm out, it pulls me back in.

Thanks so much; I could use it!

Day 2 of teaching via Sakai's chatroom client. My students are together in our classroom, and so it's like peeking through a keyhole for me.

Which is to say, not entirely satisfying, and yet I'm grateful to get any glimpse of what's going on I can.

Heh. The fever's gone, though the rest of the symptoms are lingering. I'm mostly at home out of a desire not to infect everyone...

Super cool. I'll look forward to reading more.

Wow - awesome line from my class's online discussion: "the entire history of authorship is about fan fiction."

It's an updating of the Roland Barthes line: Every text is a tissue of quotations. The specific ref: Chauc/Shakes Troilus&Cressida.

~@plragde But so many other possibilities. I love supplanting Bloom's anxiety of influence with fan fiction...

~@plragde I'm less sure there's that great a divide between borrowing/quotation and other forms of appropriation...

~@plragde A Thousand Acres/Clueless are exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to get at. There's a deep relationship btw Clueless & fanfic...

But that's a pretty fine distinction. The point is that the "author" is no more original than the writer of fanfic... [1/2]

All authorship is borrowing, in some form or another. [2/2]

That's fantastic -- I hadn't heard that. Thanks for passing it on!

@kfitz Michael Chabon has said all his writing is fan fiction. Another reason to love him. $$via @nancybaym$$

That's just plain awesome.

~@annehelen methodology = nil; have you read the description of my blog? These lists are just link farms trying to produce google juice...

Thank you so much! I'm increasingly excited about the possibilities...

H1N1 results are back - negative. So we're back to bronchitis, which is not getting better. I feel, in fact, like I cracked a rib coughing.

And not to whine, but: all this, and no freaking immunity to show for it?

Yup. Everything hurts, in one very specific spot.

Glad it's working for you. I absolutely love it - the one service I cannot do without. #dropbox

The one on Hollywood Blvd? Sounds good!

Sheesh. Nothing to see here; moving on.

Texas Tech needs a new chin strap contractor. I'm just saying.

@nowviskie I send recovery & immunity wishes your way, as one who hasn't recovered or cashed in on the immunity. :(

No, no - what's the internet for, if not whining? Just sending you wishes for a speedy recovery, and wishing I'd gotten immunity!

New blog post: Teaching When $$You Think$$ You Have the Flu http://bit.ly/17nS4q

Thanks! It was an awful lot of fun & a great audience to get those ideas in front of. And my answers have been called "cheeky"!

@CapitolClio Somebody did -- and it worked!

Home from a return trip to the urgent care. Bruised rib is excruciating. Got steroids plus more codeine to STOP THE COUGH. Wish me luck.

They did an xray so at least I know it's not cracked, but I think the treatment is the same: wait six weeks. :(

Yup. It's been pretty awful. Hopefully on the mend, though!

I think that's where it all started - irritation from the smoke led to bronchial infection, etc. etc.

Laudanum would be just the thing, as I'm feeling mightly consumptive...

In Los Feliz for dinner and the end of Infinite Summer at Skylight Books. #infsum

Are we going to be 3? and inside or out? I'll get us a table.

okay, inside. see you soon!

cool beans. I'm here.

I heard the squealing tires and looked back to you see jump out of the way - awful!

A lovely and memorable night - thanks so much!

Wow. I haven't had a migraine in two years, and I've got serious migraine-aura this morning. Stress much? So glad I have one last Maxalt...

Going back to bed until I can see again. Back to Planned Obsolescence shortly, I hope.

Can mostly see out of both eyes again, though with the Maxalt it kinda feels like I'm seeing out of someone else's eyes. But it's a start!

Thanks so much! This morning has been nuts, but I'm looking forward to reading your comments & continuing the conversation...

Hey, I forgot to tell you about that at dinner! Thanks for the reminder, @mattbucher!

It was the perfect epigraph for the project - how could I not use it?

Thanks so much! We're very excited, needless to say.

Or, is there is a tuition benefit, why it should be universally given to faculty rather than only to those with children.

$$And therefore why it shouldn't be off\-limits in times of budget cuts\.$$

But this isn't about universal child education; it's about a differential benefit - a huge difference!

Thank you - for the comments and for this!

Yay!

Good grief, it's delightful outside. How long has it been since I've been able to say that?

Thanks so much for taking the time! Still playing catch-up today, but look forward to continuing the conv. Will def. follow up.

Me neither. But it's only 7.19 am Google time, so there's still hope. I hope.
