All of mine are doing this, too, & makes me nuts. Has made me wonder if this is how HS are teaching transition.

A mere 120 to go. $$One day soon, I hope to have something else of interest to say\.$$

Dude, I brought my laser last time but they made me leave it outside the Old Post Office.

"It's okay, sir; I'm a digital humanist." I like it.

Stopped for dinner with 74 to go. There was beer. Suspect I may not make it much further. Beginning to download for the plane. *sigh*

Waiting to take off for IAH, on my way to NYC for MLA. Have a teeny bit of work to do on the way. Keep the coffee coming, Continental!

Writey is definitely good. It's particularly appealing when you're facing moving house, or a stack of thankless admin tasks.

Hahahahahahaha. Haha. Ha. Um.

You know, I was thinking of suggesting that to @mlaconvention; would certainly make for a more amusing process.

But then some smart aleck would figure out the URL shortener, and we'd be back where we started.

One IS cognizant of one's privilege, thanks, as I do note in the post. Also, most such leaves are grant/fellowship funded.

And I take that point. But some grad students are on non-teaching fellowships, so it's not a grad/faculty divide.

If someone told you you were in a "d&d free workplace," what would you take that to mean?

That's what *I* thought!

Congratulations, @cgbrooke! Collin Brooke wins Computers & Composition Distinguished Book Award for Lingua Fracta! $$via @kakennedy$$

So, on the "d&d free" issue: I immediately leapt to d20s too, but it turns out that the reference was way more 1980s personal ads than that.

HA! $$Wish I could elaborate, but can't just yet\. Soon, I swear\.$$

Wrong 1980s. Think craigslist, but earlier.

It's even better than that, though it does rely on a delicious ambiguity between vindication and vindictiveness.

Unofficially, yes. I'll announce once it's official...

Fantastic - yes! I'll look forward to it. $$Alas, I have to leave Dartmouth abt 4 for my flight, but it'll be great to see you\.$$

Departing LGA for IAH after two exhausting and exhilarating days at the MLA. Now to catch up on everything I let drop for the last 2 weeks.

It's increased Kindle sales to me by infinity percent. Before iPad, 0; since, 3, all bought bc unavailable in iBooks

That was the very first album I ever bought. I look back on that with amazement, being like 11 & devoid of taste at the time.

Actually, I don't find it embarrassing - pretty astonishing to have my first album be one I'd still be willing to listen to.

Feeling rilly sentimental about the end of the semester. Not just that I'm going on leave - I'll miss these particular classes. A lot.

Do you know if the order in which schools were admitted to "thefacebook.com" during its first year or so is available anywhere? #lazyweb

That one's more or less what I know: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia > Ivies > whoever. I'm curious about the order of whoever.

But honestly, it doesn't really matter; I'm getting myself bogged down in a side point. :-/ Thanks anyhow!

Ohmygoodness, whataweek.

Editing together video for a talk I won't be here to give on Friday. Starting to think I may have made this more complicated than necessary.

Suddenly feel... what is this bizarre sensation? As though I'm actually on top of all my deadlines? As though panic is not imminent? Weird.

Okay, that worked a little better than I hope you actually meant it to. $$Instant brain response: Crap\! Which one?\!?$$

Am officially at the point in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at which I'm starting to drag my heels, not wanting it to end.

And yes, that means I'm reading a novel tonight. So there.

Yes, absolutely. The best kind of work!

We have 0 from dept. All \$ is awarded at the college level. In prev yrs, fac got 2 funded trips; this yr, 1. $$I self\-funded 4\.$$

The semester must be nearly over because I'm thinking about things like the relative merits of DevonThink and Evernote.

DT is another info mgt tool, in some ways way more powerful than Evernote $$contextual searching etc$$, but maybe a bit too much.

One word for you: Scantron. $$Seriously, you are a better man than I; there's no way I could manage that\.$$

I get that. I frown on them too, but SHEESH already.

I definitely hear that - I spent 11 yrs split btw 2 depts, and we never get TAs. But we are lucky to have small classes!

I can't imagine having large classes with that much grading and no TA support. I send you speedy grading vibes.

New blog post: Time Will Tell, But Epistemology Won't: The Richard Rorty Archive http://bit.ly/czqLiT

I finished it last night; it pays off quite well. Will look forward to hearing what you think.

They are, aren't they? I loved that.

This is why I don't commute to L.A. http://yfrog.com/2g9m1j

I did the same, but finally caved - the iPad version is really nice. But I still resent the triple charge.

Seriously contemplating a switch from DT to Evernote; like the ease of use & low overhead. But need a fan to tell me: should I go premium?

That's nice to know, thanks!

Actually, that's a good point; I'm going to be moving a lot of stuff. And I like the any-file-format feature...

The one thing that's irritating me so far about Evernote is that txt is a premium-only file format. Really?

I've got THOUSANDS of them. Okay, hundreds. But still. May upgrade just so I can drag & drop.

Ooh! Tell me how you like it - I've been contemplating one too!

Yes, of course; the challenge is wanting to get my hundreds of txt files *into* Evernote.

DevonThink - amazingly powerful information/document manager, but way more than I really need & w/o Evernote's syncing ability.

Sigh. That was me: Found nifty txt/rtf-to-Evernote importing script: http://bit.ly/a7IiFZ

It's more for notetaking than for citation organization...

About the same time "relatable" became a word, I think. *sigh*

Onboard, awaiting takeoff. Will be my first flight with wifi. Join us in the 21st century, Continental! Um, United. Uninental? Continited?

Go, Julie!

Ooh, let me know if you get good recs. I'm not planning on trading the 12-yr-old Civic in any time soon but wish it were iPodable.

Have gotten just about everything from one database migrated from DevonThink to Evernote. Some cleaning up to do, but seems good.

5 hour flight with wifi went by in a flash. 3 hour drive thereafter, a bit less so. Thank goodness it's gorgeous out there.

So sorry to have missed today's session! Hanover says hi, though.

Hey there. Yeah, I'm here - let's definitely plan on lunch!

Soap operas!

NO!!! I'm... horrified. Furious! How can this possibly be? I'm so sorry, Steve...

Dartmouth Digital Humanities symposium beginning. No word of a hashtag. I vote for #dighum, which produces nothing on search right now.

That would work. Or #DartDH, which frees up a few extra characters.

#DartDH is livestreaming at http://bit.ly/DartDigHumStream - program at http://www.dartmouth.edu/~dighum/program.html

Mary Flanagan kicking off #DartDH with "The Digital Humanities Today."

Mary Flanagan on multiplicity of DH: "The day we define it in a lockstep way is the day I'm working in a new field." #DartDH

@brettbobley Will do!

*sigh* Was talking with @jmittell and didn't realize I should have been ready for my closeup!

Whoops. Guess I should have realized that that big camera right in front of me might be live. #DartDH

Tom Streeter up now at #DartDH, talking about his forthcoming book, The Net Effect $$from my friends at @NYUPress$$.

Streeter: most powerful force maintainin openness of internet is memory of the romantic stories told about the internet's openness #DartDH

Murray: fears among some that if we permit electronic publishing, it'll lead to general erosion of standards $$peer review, quality$$ #DartDH

Sigh. Remembering why I don't like presenting on a machine other than mine. That was... awkward.

Are you watching? Thanks for the kind words. Felt worse than it was, I hope.

Thank you. At several points I was quite concerned about that - kept losing my own thread in trying to see my presenter notes!

On the plane, on my way back to LA. Fantastic day at #DartDH, though, as Echo might say, I wasn't my best. Happily, everyone else rocked.

Same for #rorty! If only that two-places-at-once thing really worked.

Okay, enough with the bumpity. New altitude, please. $$This inflight internet is awesome for playing backseat pilot\.$$

It's probably just as well that I haven't been able to blog/tweet from a plane before now!

Somewhere over Missouri. This has been a bumpy day. Hanging on for Sunday evening.

About to enter Kansan airspace. So far so good. $$Have a good trip\!$$

This freaking semester, and everything that has gone along with it, will be OVER.

Though I had a rather lengthy debate about whether Sunday evening was the demarcator I'm looking for. Really middle of next week.

I'm only 15 hours behind on the Twitter stream, but I was required to swear that you'd show up in person for #mla11.

New blog post: A Little $$Self\-$$Promotion http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/a-little-self-promotion/

Oh, just wait; I'll be complaining about the kids today and their music any second now. :)

Thanks, all - I'm pretty happy about it, needless to say! As I told the @profhacker crew, first round at @THATCamp is on me.

You like me! You really like me!

You did, indeed. Thanks much!

Yeah, you told me about that! Mine should in theory provide an increase in salary, but probably an increase in committee work too.

Thanks, Brett; I'm thrilled, needless to say!

And a pipe with a very rich tobacco.

Thanks, Jason!

I hear that; I marvel at productive folks with kids. Cats are almost more than I can manage, some days.

Thank you - that means a lot to me!

Thanks, Barbara - see you soon, I hope?

Yes, definitely. See you there!

Oh, that's just crazy talk!

Oh yes, all three! There will be much celebration... $$And thanks\!$$

My flight gets into DCA at 7pm Friday; if there's Auld Shebeening after 8ish, let me know...

I know I'm supposed to sneer at Wave, but both of my spring classes used it to very good effect. I'm happy that accounts are now open.

Pretty much "it didn't save the world after all; ergo, it sucks."

I think perhaps a @ProfHacker post on just that topic may be in the offing.

I think the iPad has the benefit of Steve's RDF; one you've actually used one, sneering at it becomes much more difficult.

LOL. Literally.

I use iAnnotate, which ROCKS. Syncs with a designated folder on your hard drive.

How much do I hate the IT assumption that they can manage my work computer better than I can? A lot, that's how much.

I get into DCA at 7ish. Keep me posted on any whereabouts...

Sounds good to me. Haven't a clue where that was, though.

Trying to decide if I want to try traveling with the iPad only, instead of bringing the laptop, too. Think this might not be the right trip.

IAH, on my way to DCA. It always annoys me to fly between these airports but at least there's no 7ft rakish statue of ol'whatsisname at DCA.

I don't suppose that an airport gift shop would have actual cold & sinus meds $$the pseudoephedrine kind, not the weaksauce replacement$$...?

The way my sinuses feel right now, it'd be worth it. I'll go hunt them down!

Are you sticking around thereafter?

Rats; no dice. Only the PE stuff. Thanks for messing it up for everyone, meth industry!

Rats. Well, I'll wave at you from the Metro.

I'd feel better about the trade if I could breathe while watching it.

No kidding. Had an interesting convo w/ a pharm once, who thinks the log issue is attempting to regulate sales [1/2]

rather than purchase - that the prob was pharms selling it out the back door & now they have to be accountable.

At DCA metro, waiting what will apparently be 12min for the next blue line train. Don't drink all the beer before I get there, thatcampers.

Excellent. I'm about 5 mins from Vienna; will come out after checking into hotel.

Are you gone? If you can hang on a couple I'll pack up & join you. If not, I'll see you there!

Be right there!

#THATCamp is getting started! @dancohen giving us a bit of history and a bit of looking forward.

Nobody except @alxjrvs, who is stubbornly insisting that he likes his.

Rules of #thatcamp: no grandstanding, no presentations, no slides, no spectators, no hierarchy. On the positive sides: hugs are approved.

Are you in the house? If so, yay! #thatcamp

Can confirm, except that it was more of a "holy crap" moment.

Will confess much as I love my iPad that I'm remembering why I still travel with the MBAir: hate not having notes and Twitter open at once.

Unfortunately, most of what I've written over the last 2 years could qualify for #hackacad; I'm having a hard time deciding what to submit.

@patrickgmj leading #thatcamp session "Who wants to be a hacker?" Answer: me! A major goal of this sabbatical, in fact.

I'm in. #thatcamp

Only one session of #thatcamp so far and already my head is buzzing. Really looking forward to dreaming up more projects.

Whoops! At least you're not having to listen to my head-ringtone. #thatcamp

Dork shorts at #thatcamp! So far, me, @patrickgmj, @alxjrvs, David Staley.

Sadly, no; keyboard cat has been replaced with an iPad dinger. But the interface - it's almost like magic!

Here comes the @BaronessElsa! #thatcamp

Maybe, but it's about a streaming long manhood. What kind of followers is she after? #thatcamp

Let's do it! #thatcamp

From the design patterns room: 1 iPad $$that I can see$$, 3 netbooks, 8 MacBooks, 5 Windows laptops, 1 Moleskine. #thatcamp

Didn't realize you were behind me until I saw your tweet! #thatcamp

I've been using Twitterific; really hated the Tweetdeck client.

Open Peer Review session Google Doc: http://bit.ly/anFtEM #thatcamp

Trying that Open Peer Review Google Doc link again; should be open now. http://bit.ly/anFtEM #thatcamp

Sorry; I'll try harder! #thatcamp

RT: "For the most liberal part of the academy, we're the most conservative re: evaluating alternative publishing" --@dancohen #thatcamp

Not sure I follow you on "questioning impact." The "we" was humanists, who prefer binary up or down peer rev to the mush of impact.

Cool! I need to know more about Arcade & how it works... #thatcamp

I'll never share my hard-earned #mla09 t-shirt! But I'll let adoring fans, um, adore.

not immediately; bar first. Come with!

Thats my plan; the trick will be keeping someone sober enough $$or finding a cab$$.

Alas, tonight! Am staying at a hotel in DC. Am at the Auld Shebeen right now, tho.

I thought it was just because I'm REALLY fabulous.

Indeed! We'll have to find another opportunity to plot, I hope before #mla11.

Troubleshooting tips from my hotel: if your browser will not display web pages & your laptop has an on/ off switch make sure it's turned on.

Yay, I have a suitcase! This will make all. the. difference. At least to those around me tomorrow!

In other news, vaguely certain that the hotel front desk staff think some illicit business is being conducted in my room.

Me checking in without a suitcase and then having one delivered to me out front 30 mins later, at 12.45 am.

Which is to say there's No Telling what I'm up to in here.

Like @patrickgmj, could not get to sleep for anything last night. Up until after 3, jangling with the excitement of #thatcamp!

I'd support that proposition. #thatcamp

Hmm. Good question; I'll need to look into it! #thatcamp

Yes, yes, yes!

No worries - will look forward to more soon! #thatcamp

Safe trips home, #thatcamp-ers. See many of you soon, I hope!

Yeah, was at THATCamp yesterday; today & tomorrow at a meeting in DC. Were you at C19?

Realizing that I will in fact have to miss the #LOST finale due to a meeting dinner. Will I have to avoid Twitter until I can watch it?

And how long before ABC will have it available for streaming?

The new Tantalus: I have a bottle of wine. It has a plastic cork. The crap corkscrew it came with cannot make it budge.

So sorry I had to miss today; yesterday was the best first half of #thatcamp ever. Thanks to you and the rest of @chnm for it!

Saved by the bellguys downstairs. Have glass of wine and Stieg Larsson for an hour's relaxation.

Very sorry you won't be joining us, too! It was a productive day today. I'll look forward to more scheming with you soon.

THATCamp was awesome; journal meeting has been too. Don't fly back to SoCal until Tuesday, tho...

Fantastic seeing you, if not enough. I'll look forward to more at #dh2010 and #sci8!

Definitely!

First submission for #hackacad: "The Stakes of Disciplinarity" http://bit.ly/cqKeY6

You mean the whiteboard version? #thatcamp

Okay, off to dinner. Pls to get all of your #LOST live-tweeting out of your system before I come back. Or hope I can watch tonight.

Back from amazing dinner, waaaaay too late for Lost & even more too early for streaming. Am doomed to avoid Internet for foreseeable future.

Fantastic getting to meet you & spend some time over dinner. I'll hope for more soon!

That's really driven by your doc rather than by Zotero. Word lets you have notes restart numbering in each chapter...

spending the year at NYU, so we'll definitely catch up then, if not before. Sorry to bag so late!

Wow, that was awesome.

No, it was the message that started out as a DM and ended as a live tweet. Whoops. $$Am in mid\-huluing of finale now, tho\.$$

Uncertain when I ate the box of razorblades, or why, exactly, but am pretty sure it wasn't a good idea. #ugh

Oh, that is so not good to hear. I have to be on a plane tomorrow at noon. Glad to hear you're better, though!

Hoping you'll all forgive or ignore the following tweet.

Am seriously hoping that the reverse peristalsis portion of today's festivities is over. But, alas, am not optimistic about it. #iamsick :(

PS: this is not the best day I've ever spent in a hotel room. And I do not look forward to attempting to fly home tomorrow.

You are so kind! I'm actually in DC, and the roomsvc guys have brought me gingerale. Could be much worse!

thanks so much!

You & me both, I assure you.

Good grief. I'll stop whining! This is a fiesta by comparison.

Thanks so much, Brett! $$Was going to attempt a joke about government in action, but can't quite put it together\.$$

Thank you so much! Mostly just hoping to fall asleep now.

Hmm. I would be a little worried about what the process might turn the ginger ale into by the time it got approved.

Never did get the Sudafed. Happily, my sinuses cleared up. Cannot say much for the rest of me.

Dear digestive tract: awesome D! Way to show those microbes who's boss. But here's the thing, I swear: there is NOTHING left in you. Chill.

I seem to have survived. Not exactly planning on rushing out and grabbing a cheeseburger, but I think I'll be able to fly home.

Alas, yes; I need to watch it again. I think I liked it, and I'm pretty sure the puking was unrelated. But I need to check. :)

Me too! I prefer to be left alone when I'm sick, but there's alone and then there's *alone*.

Have drunk some ginger ale and eaten a cracker. The world has not come to an end, though it was a little iffy there for a minute.

Ugh, the mere thought. I'm sticking with the ginger ale and crackers for the time being. But thanks.

No worries there - trust me.

Have made it all the way home without incident. Nonetheless, flying immediately after so much incident was no fun at all. Do NOT recommend.

Would like to propose draft of ch5, "The University," but not sure whether that would work. http://bit.ly/cJqSFv #hackacad

Happened to my mother once. 2 mo later, we found a pkg of $$no longer$$ frozen broccoli in the trunk -had fallen out of a groc bag.

Remember yesterday when I said that I'd apparently survived? Spoke too soon. I promise to avoid any further details.

I am eating rice.

In other news, I've decided that living alone makes tweeting while sick too tempting, & probably both tedious and icky for one's followers.

Cautious, nothing! Me, white rice, and diluted Gatorade; it's a regular party in here.

Thanks so much, Liz - I'm hoping I'm really on the mend!

Whoa, new feature added to recent Chrome build: what you see when your secure connection to a website fails. http://yfrog.com/bgo1pp

Whoa. You go. So to speak.

Hahahahahaha! Coke used to do the trick for me, but somehow the acid was a problem this time. Am now on gatorade & sparkling water.

I am nothing short of astonished by how much better I feel. Go white rice!

RT @ProfHacker: New at ProfHacker: @kfitz looks around "After the Review": http://bit.ly/cGyn08

Out of bed today, and pretty much recovered, but after nearly 72 hours on ginger ale, 4 crackers, and 2 bowls of rice, a little dopey.

So it's a housekeeping day around these parts, taking care of mindless stuff I've been putting off. Hope to return to the big thoughts tmw.

Not many of us use 3G on our laptops. If a certain unnamed smartphone service provider would allow tethering already, maybe.

Oh my word there has to be a better way. Which is to say I'd rather never fit in my favorite pants again.

3G is utterly inaccessible in most conf rooms in the Bonaventure, if #mla11 sessions will be there. Other hotels may vary.

SCMS was there in March. Trust me when I say Do Not Want. Much better just to visit - go to the revolving bar up top!

Conv ctr/Marriott may not be bad for 3G. And both are on Boingo network for those who subscribe $$aka, me$$.

Awful. A case study in "you can't get there from here." It's totally worth seeing, but not a good place to have a conference.

On top of which, I just found it oppressive somehow. Never really had a space piss me off before, but this one did.

I wonder what gives you that impression.

Mostly. But the other issue is that there are NO good lines of sight in the hotel; trying to find someone in the lobby is awful.

Requires lots of walking in circles. And if they're walking in circles, looking for you...

See F. Jameson, Postmodernism: a most disorienting hotel, for which one needs a seriously good cognitive GPS device.

RT @zota: BP lied about the size of the spill. Arco is a BP brand. Just throwing that info out there, west coast gas buyers.

Sorry for the double RT; Tweetie lied and said the first one failed.

Actually, that was Portuguese, which is even weirder.

Having one of those mornings in which I want to be working on twelve things at once; not doing well at prioritizing in linear fashion.

Almost forgot to submit for #hackacad: On Open Access Publishing http://bit.ly/4KKCj1

Am taking advantage of this week's forced de-caffeination to undo my coffee habit. White tea this morning, which I forgot how much I love.

No, I haven't, but I've heard good things. I'll have to test it out!

So, so sorry to hear that. But know that PO Media Studies loves you!

Submitted for #hackacad & building on @dancohen and @sramsay: "Open Access Publishing and Scholarly Values $$part 3$$" http://bit.ly/ad4nxX

Sounds like a plan - thanks!

Thanks!

Ooh, one thing, though: it's Fitzpatrick. $$Someday I will convince the world of the superiority of Fitzpatrick over Fitzgerald\.$$

No worries; it's an easy and understandable slip, which I get all the time. Stupid F. Scott.

Also Katherine rather than Kathleen, but I consider that anti-Irish bias.

Absolutely! Was great to have you out last month, if too briefly, and in the midst of chaos. We'll have to do it again soon.

Related to the substitution of material form for impact that you & I have been talking about, I think.

I agree that junior scholars can/will/should take initiative on OA, etc, but I still think senior folks must take the lead [1/2]

in ensuring that those junior scholars are supported in their work and that their work is read and evaluated appropriately. [2/2]

Hey, thanks for the "best of" nomination! Let me know if you have thoughts about what you might want & how I can help.

Why is the thing I'm most alarmed by in the Gary Coleman story that he was MY AGE? $$And did I expect him to be older or younger? Not sure\.$$

Except that it's not "oh my god, he died at 42?" but "oh my god, he was 42?" It's less about mortality than literally his age.

et al: this is exactly the thing I'm talking about; not that it's unsafe for jr folks to pub in OA/alt venues [1/2]

but that sr folks like @RayS6 @sramsay et al have to make the argument re the importance of doing so in the rev proc.

I'm torn between feeling HUGELY flattered and mildly old.

I will happily accept that! Do let me know, though, if you want me to make some selection$$s$$.

Don't get me wrong - 42 is *super* young, and I've got a ton more to do. But I was surprised that my shock wasn't about mortality!

Why do I find it so hard to let the registration on a domain I don't use expire?

Interesting nonetheless - thanks!

Congratulations!

Damn, it all comes back to that, doesn't it.

Actually, the last time I let one go, I needed it again 2 yrs later, and it's been held hostage since. That may be it.

Something like that. It's also the fear that I might need it later & not be able to get it back $$as happened with another one$$.

Hurts to say: mediacommons. I think I had .org, .net, & .com. But I thot, that name will never work! All are being held hostage now.

No kidding. So electrapress is up for renewal, and tho it's been out of service for 3+ yrs, I'm afraid to let it go.

Exactly. I've been debating for a month and can't decide. I think it's going to get flushed, but... ugh.

Fan-TAS-tic! I'm very excited; keep me posted.

Yes, of course! I look forward to testing and expect to have many brilliant if technically impossible suggestions. :)

Looking at a very complex set of tickets for #dh2010 and #sci8, with apt-hunting time in NYC. This is going to be difficult and non-cheap.

Ooh, that's exciting to hear! I have to wait for the NYU developers come back from the weekend before I can play. :(

A bit too in the thick of it at the moment, but let's do swap soon!

Wha? They're already ground! If that can break a garbage disposal, what's a garbage disposal for?

For doss, I'd go with whatever you find easiest. Prob start at 1 for each chapter, yes.

Super cool! $$Though I keep looking for the button on the video interface that will make everyone stop interrupting you\.$$
