You'll be great!

Ugh, so sorry to hear this! I've had it happen a couple of times and found the waiting part to be the hardest. Sending good vibes.

Hey, @thatcamp: did I see a tweet go by in the last day or so about THATCamp NYC? Looking for dates...

Aw, dude. It was WordCamp NYC. Rats.

Yup; that was it exactly.

Undoubtedly! Alas, October would be the ideal moment for me to talk with a bunch of DH nerds about a *Drupal* based project...

Who, me? $$Uh, yeah, actually\.$$

Your feet are going to be on the ground.

Okay, what gives? The Weather app on my iPhone keeps changing my New York entry to Hoboken.

Wasn't really trying; just wondering who else here is as suggestible as I am.

I carry a compass. It helps me along.

Forward.

I doubt that's it; there is definitely a weather station in NYC $$in Central Park$$, and this is a new problem...

The Apple discussion pages have other folks pointing to the same issue; may be a problem in Yahoo's feed, or in iOS 4.02.

This just started today; for the last three weeks, it's said "New York." My Paris entry changed, too. Might be a Yahoo prob.

I do not feel at all ready to start writing this article yet, but I must force myself. Tomorrow. There Will Be Sentences.

By the by, the 1st goal of my sabbatical has been met: I ran 3mi today without feeling like I was going to die. It's the first time in 5yrs!

Calling me a marathoner would seriously over dignify it, but I have run 2. Blew an arch in training for the 2nd; hence the 5yrs!

I'd say that's a good question, except that I've been breathing August Manhattan air for the last month, and that can't be better.

You. Go.

Eek! Even if you mean minutes per mile, you sorely overestimate me. I'm running just under 11 right now, aiming for 10.

Not just the arch that's healing, but the desire to run. So nice to have it back. No more marathons for me; I'm happy with my 3.

That's great, though! We'll definitely do it. My secondary goal this year will be motivating others. http://bit.ly/dc0aVw

What I find myself astonished by are the conferences that use campus facilities and still charge hundreds.

Yes, but surely campuses don't charge hotel conv center rates? Or perhaps not *don't* but *shouldn't*.

No, really. I love the DH confs, don't get me wrong, but they're crazy expensive in comparison with most humanities confs.

Don't misunderstand: I'm not operating under the illusion that ADHO is making $$off the conf. But they're expensive enough $$1/2$$ Replying to @fraistat in comparison with other confs that I wonder. If it's the campus facilities/services that are the cause, that's upsetting. $$2/3$$ Replying to @fraistat One would like to think campus facilities/services were there to, say, facilitate and serve academic endeavors. $$3/3$$ Replying to @sshreeves Yeeks. That's awful. The entire university system has become a demented revenue generation machine, with one branch being extorted by another $$1/2$$ and looking for ways to pass those charges on. $$2/2$$ Speaking of DH conferences, is anyone from #DH2010 still reading that email account? I have an issue I inquired about a week or so ago... Replying to @melissaterras Thanks, Melissa! I'll do so. Walked into the office... having left the laptop at home. It's me and the iPhone and a... whaddaya call those things? Oh, yeah: a book. The book? Ironically enough, Ted Striphas's brilliant The Late Age of Print. Replying to @nkelber This is an even older model. Paper-based, if you can believe it. A little static, but very stable. Replying to @jbj My sense is that it starts with stuff you bought from the iTunes store, because you must like that stuff the best! Replying to @jbj Mine was off bc I've bought so much more from Amazon than iTunes, but yeah, the iTunes purchases it grabbed were weird. I don't know if it's the heat or what, but I've had a lousy headache and a total lack of focus for three days now. Enoughs, already. Replying to @brettbobley It's possible. But it also feels like it's the weight of my glasses on my nose. Could they be heavier in NY than in CA? Replying to @brettbobley Maybe it's the higher humidity interacting with the antireflective coating or something. I have literally just put in my contact lenses because my glasses were giving me a bridge of the nose ache. Given that I don't see as well with contacts anymore, and have been forbidden from wearing them full time anymore, this does not bode well. Replying to @2xlp No, mine are plastic. I'm not sure why they're suddenly bothering me so much; they never have before... Just got an email from Facebook saying they were sorry I was having trouble logging into my account. I wasn't. It's a password reset msg... ...and all the links appear to actually go to Facebook. Does this mean someone was trying to login to my account? Replying to @2xlp Hmmm. Raw email message is a mass of code; no real text. Headers look realistic, though. Replying to @mikejolk Definitely did not follow any link. Headers of the message look realistic but the raw message itself is a mass of code. A puzzle. After an inexplicably lousy day yesterday, today is thus far 100% rocking. Replying to @JenHoward I'm just trying to imagine a scenario in which a 2-yr-old needs to pronounce "macchiato." I'm not usually one for the #FF, but if you're not following @mlaconvention, you should. $$1/2$$ When before has the membership of a massive disciplinary organization had such great access to its executive director? $$2/2$$ Replying to @sleonchnm Yes! I love that I can dump messages that I have to do something about but not exactly respond to into "starred." Replying to @sleonchnm So they're still there & I don't forget about them, but they're not mixed in with the ones that need answering. Replying to @mlaconvention My pleasure! Replying to @plragde As well it should. A 2-inch palmetto bug just came blithely strolling across my floor. I miss the desert. Replying to @AnitaBlanchard Oh, trust me: I grew up in Louisiana. I know, all too well. So now I have shoes on. Replying to @midwinter_ Yes. I shall now tweet the cup of tea I am making. $$Actually, it's a response to the 2\-INCH FLYING COCKROACH in my apartment\.$$ Replying to @mlaconvention I had a cat years ago in Louisiana that loved to hunt these things. I really miss him right now. I swear I can hear it... Replying to @eetempleton No, but I missed him with the legal pad I threw, and now have NO IDEA WHERE HE IS. Replying to @mlaconvention I'm not sure Meiga would really like being borrowed, alas. Replying to @digipub Thank *you*! Replying to @midwinter_ I miss many things about southern Louisiana. These things are not one of them. Haven't seen the water bug since I flung a legal pad at him. Hoping the threat of flying office supplies has him looking for other housing. Replying to @billiehara Say you cannot discuss today, period. Do not talk with law firm AT ALL until you've talked with former chair or college counsel. Replying to @brettbobley Nasty things. The day I realized they could fly was one of the most traumatic days of my childhood - & that's saying something. A tiny shout-out to the NYTimes article on open peer review embedded in this Paris Review post: http://bit.ly/9YjTHc My latest is up at @ProfHacker: "Traveler's Aid: Delayed Flight Edition" http://bit.ly/aw9o4s I've been here a month today. A month! Already! The good news is that exciting things are happening, which I'll get to post about soon. Replying to @janaremy YAY!!! So glad to hear the good news. Replying to @barbarahui Yay, congratulations! Uh-oh: Gourmet Garage curry cashews. High today: 82º. Current temperature: 84º. Before 11 am. Hmmm... Replying to @amandafrench I thought it was hotter than it should have been! Replying to @mlaconvention Quite possibly! I'll keep you posted. Replying to @mlaconvention Not clickable in Chrome; Safari gives an error msg saying the url is invalid; Firefox tries to go to a url w/in the MLA site. I just bought a pair of reading glasses, which I now need if I'm wearing my contact lenses. This makes me less happy than you might think. Replying to @AlxJrvs Hey there, from my temporary quarters at NYU! You go, Dr. @alicetiara! RT @BiellaColeman: Another doctor in the house; just got back from @alicetiara 's defense. congrats. job well done! I am once again missing my laundry machines. Awesome delivery fluff-n-fold service, but with two $$pretty minor$$ problems: [more] Problem 1: I am just anal enough that I wind up refolding everything. Really, I'd almost rather just fold it right the first time. [more] Problem 2: The running bra of mystery. A more serious problem. Where did it come from? Where has it been? Will try not to ponder. [fin] Replying to @mkirschenbaum I have heard tell of such troping. Replying to @billiehara OMG. If you haven't already, get your university counsel on this. They have no right to corner you w/o your representation! Replying to @boonebgorges Hey, happy birthday! Replying to @veek That's hysterical. And dismaying, when you think about it. And then hysterical again. Replying to @cpatell Hey, welcome back! Looking forward to saying hi sometime soon. New post: Talk at the Hemispheric Institute http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/talk-at-the-hemispheric-institute/ Replying to @jcmeloni Yikes! Now stop twittering - both hands on the wheel! Replying to @jcmeloni Phew. In both cases. Replying to @eetempleton and @samplereality I stayed there during SCMS last year and have to say that the place just made me feel really really old. For #mla11: don't miss 12 ACH-sponsored demos of New $$& Renewed$$ Work in Digital Literary Studies: http://is.gd/f2ExJ //via @nowviskie Announcing the relaunch of The New Everyday at MediaCommons: http://bit.ly/cJJxUM See The New Everyday at http://bit.ly/9tS6PY Replying to @mkirschenbaum The author function? Replying to @whitneytrettien This is the beauty of Instapaper; I can placate myself with the idea that I'll read it someday. Replying to @mkirschenbaum and @jasonrhody I think this is the first time I've ever heard Foucault associated with flowchartiness. Replying to @lblanken I used it for a conf call this wk over an 800 # service. All I have is my cell & I didn't want to use minutes. Worked brilliantly. Replying to @veek Oh, Vika, I'm so sorry. Sending you all my good wishes. Reasons to "pre-publish" your book online: reviews that appear before the print edition. $$Online, of course\.$$ http://bit.ly/al7vcU Working at home today, and the internets have gone down. This is not cool. Okay, by my last tweet I meant to say COME BACK, INTERNETS. No fooling. $$Are you listening, RoadRunner NYC?$$ I'd be worried about the relationship between the fact that the Internet is down and the fact that I've just made a breakthrough on [more] this article except that I've been frantically checking my Internet connection the whole time. Also, iPhone. So no correlation, right? [fin] Best birthday present ever: the massive playlist @mmwwah and Steph gave me for my 40th, composed of top songs from all 40 years. [more] I put it in my running playlist & am always thrilled when something I forgot I had comes up in rotation. Today post-run, "My Sharona." [fin] RunKeeper just sent me a FitnessAlert! email to say that I'd set a new personal record. That's the only kind of Alert! email I want to get. Replying to @mmwwah Heh. I get a lot from the mix and am almost always surprised, mostly in a good way. But there's always a second of "I own this?" Fabulous dinner with my sister, but am happily home. Windows open, fan going. There shall be valerian tea, and dammit, I'm sleeping tonight. You know what's awful? When people you really respect are totally gushing about the new thing from someone you hate. I mean, hate hate. [+] And they gush such that you think you might like it too if you gave it a chance, but you hate the person involved too much to do it. [+] So, to cut the cryptitude, everybody needs to STOP GOING ON about the new Franzen already. Not for cash dollars already. So just stop. [-] Replying to @plragde There's definitely that. But I have hate hate deep in my heart, and even if this book were made of GENIUS, I don't think I'd do it. Replying to @kdettmar In sooooo many ways. And they just keep growing. Seriously, Time Magazine? Replying to @kdettmar That's what pushed me over the edge from "he's an ass" to "he's an unforgivable ass." & I'm less convinced about the gifted part. Replying to @brettbobley I always knew I liked you. Replying to @brettbobley and @billiehara White sausage, indeed. I now have an image I can carry with me that will keep me happy in these dark times. Replying to @kdettmar That was beneath comment. Suffice it to say: NO. Replying to @mattbucher Someday when we're in the same room I'll tell you about his performances at Pomona. Assholism of all kinds of varieties. Replying to @mattbucher And yes, Twilight, hands down. Replying to @naypinya Nice comparison! Similar smug self-congratulation. I never met Updike, though, so I can't do any personal comparison. Replying to @karikraus Beyond awful. I so wish I could write about it. Okay, this bit of Franzen-bashing has been fun & all, but my friend the water bug has reappeared. Coincidence? So much for sleeping tonight. Replying to @swarthmoreburke That's... I... And with one mighty blow from her legal pad of doom, JF the water bug was no more. Thank god. http://yfrog.com/mxhqjlj Replying to @amandafrench Please don't. Conniving bastard was only playing dead! This time he's much more discouraged, I assure you, and also in a watery grave. Replying to @brettbobley This is very, very true. Must figure out how to account for this in the second edition of Planned Obsolescence. Replying to @ambrose_mensch In the interest of someday once again sleeping in this apartment, I'll probably pass on the video... Replying to @amandafrench They were mostly separate efforts. The CP developer is for the moment unable to push forward; not sure about digress.it... Replying to @amandafrench I'm hoping we can find a way to get CP re-jumpstarted. Anyhow, I'd love to see your footnotes in action! Replying to @ambrose_mensch Oh, yes, I do remember that one! Replying to @amandafrench Ooh, wait! Are you running CP in WP3? I was under the impression that the upgrade broke the plugin! Replying to @amandafrench That's what I was afraid of. MCPress is hanging in with 2.9 for now, but I worry about unpatched security holes... Replying to @samplereality I got a bit carried away. He posed nicely before jumping up and running off again, though. Replying to @samplereality Yeah, you can never be too redundant with a water bug. Replying to @PhDeviate It's a bit misleading; the project forked. http://bit.ly/cvLHkf MediaCommons is running in CommentPress. Replying to @PhDeviate CP runs in MU quite well, but make sure you're running 2.9 -- the upgrade to WP 3.0 broke the plugin. Updates TK soon, I hope. Having one of those dithery moments of difficulty figuring out how to get started today. Work on cutting the talk or on writing the article? And yes, it's 11am and I'm just getting started, thanks to the damn water bug. Could not sleep, wondering where his friends and family were. Replying to @plragde It is a euphemism, yes, for "giant flying cockroach," where "giant" = approx. 2in. Replying to @plragde That, I'm safe from, at least for now; OCD landlord has mattress protected and all the bedding is mine, just purchased. Replying to @shermandorn Hey, thanks. Good to know! Why, oh @Amtrak, do you keep changing the price of the ticket I select once it lands in my cart? Replying to @2xlp Turns out AAA discounted fare is more than lowest available for the days I'm traveling. Replying to @2xlp Got me: lowest available was 49 each way; AAA was 66. Note popped up on screen saying "this discount is more than lowest available." Windows open, light rain. Have actually turned off the ceiling fan and put on a sweatshirt. Lovely quiet Sunday morning. Replying to @academicdave and @amandafrench That's of course crucial for my implementation, so I'm hanging in with 2.9.x until CP is updated. Replying to @amandafrench Would make it a *lot* easier, yes. To my knowledge there is not, but I'll push to see if it can happen. Replying to @academicdave It'll be too long to wait, I can almost promise. It's a shame. Replying to @amandafrench It is indeed, and there is no reason I can think of why you shouldn't. It'll be a service to the plugin's long-term viability. Replying to @amandafrench and @clioweb Oh, excellent. So now what we need is a community "update this to 3.0" campaign. Replying to @amandafrench and @boonebgorges That's paragraph-level commenting, of course; you can see it in action in 2.9 at http://bit.ly/zjXhV @boonebgorges I'd be happy to make you an admin account there if you want to get into the backend. Replying to @boonebgorges Awesome -- thanks! Replying to @clioweb and @amandafrench Ooh, that's not the same version at all. Lots has changed. Replying to @nowviskie I'll just note that $$as opposed to many of the other schools named$$ Pomona is 100% need-blind and loan-free. Replying to @jugoretz Not exactly: there was a fork. CP was significantly updated and is what we're running at MediaCommons. Replying to @jugoretz That said, DigressIt has major funding behind it right now, which CP does not. Replying to @nowviskie Happy to help restore some Sunday calm. :) Replying to @nowviskie Yes, it's a horror. One of the most principled things our trustees have done is stick w/no-loans policy in face of budget crisis. Replying to @mlaconvention Alas, too much bugz, not enough LOL. Am maintaining a crawly-free state of zen. :) Replying to @mlaconvention Love that. :) Replying to @parezcoydigo Paragraph-level commenting works? Did you upgrade to WP3.0 after installation, or install in WP3.0? Replying to @parezcoydigo Nice! Is your WP multi-site enabled? Did you do anything fancy in setup, or did it just work automagically? Replying to @parezcoydigo Wait, never mind. Of course it's multi-site enabled; I see the URL now. Huh; may have to poke at it some more. Replying to @parezcoydigo Hmm. Very interesting. I wonder what's keeping it from working elsewhere. A plugin conflict, perhaps. Replying to @academicdave and @amandafrench It's sounding more and more like a plugin conflict. Will have to experiment. Replying to @jcmeloni I beg to differ. http://bit.ly/adB6kU Replying to @jcmeloni Actually, someone I follow just shared it via Google Reader literally 5 minutes before your RT. Awesome run this afternoon. Very nice dinner. Ready for sleep now. Oh wait. Replying to @janaremy You rock! Congrats! Replying to @mlaconvention No, at the gym. RT @ProfHacker: New post: @GeorgeOnline offers "5 Analog Tools I Can't Live Without $$And Why$$" http://bit.ly/cAxbAb @amandafrench @academicdave and others who've had CommentPress trouble w/WP3.x: could you send me details about the issues? [+] @amandafrench @academicdave The developer has CP running both in a fresh install and in an upgraded install w/no problems... [-] Replying to @striphas "Trip" is not exactly the word I'd have come up with, I think. Be sure to check out the great new cluster at The New Everyday, including @dancohen, Lisa Gitelman, and many others! http://bit.ly/9tS6PY Replying to @striphas A travesty? The last straw? Clearly I'm being hyperbolic, but the deification that's come with the new book is getting to me. Replying to @striphas I'm compelled by your notion that his concerns $$contra Frey's$$ are simply orthogonal to those of the OBC, so I'd hate to see [+] Replying to @striphas him recovered now. [-] Replying to @PhDeviate Make sure you grabbed CP from http://futureofthebook.org/commentpress and not the WP plugins site. Keep me posted! Replying to @PhDeviate Unfortunately, the version on the plugins site is massively out of date, and we can't access the plugin account to update. Grrr. Replying to @billwolff Congratulations! Replying to @mariabustillos You. Rock. As always. Replying to @mlaconvention I definitely believe they have personalities. Malevolent, sneaky personalities. Replying to @jcmeloni Safe travels, and no delays! Replying to @mlaconvention That's funny, and yet all the best jokes seem inappropriate. $$Who has more personality \- bugs or\.\.\.?$$ Replying to @jcmeloni Ah, the traveler's friend! Interesting question from Bob Stein about the outlaw-hero trend in contemporary television: http://bit.ly/95yrZY Replying to @JenHoward Yes, absolutely, though I think his question is not about newness but rather about density: why so many now? Replying to @jmittell Amazons is absolutely worth checking out. Hard to come by, though. I wound up buying a 1st ed on eBay to get one. Replying to @halavais Yo, CommentPress works with WP 3.0; just grab it from http://futureofthebook.org/commentpress, not from the WP plugins site. Replying to @halavais Sorry, I'm an hour behind in this conversation. But I've got it working with a WPMU site I recently updated to 3.0. Piece of cake. Replying to @mlaconvention Super cool! One thing, tho: I tried to update my contact/inst information & it took me into the membership renewal process... Replying to @jmittell Whoa; that's great! RT @HarryReid @ladygaga There's a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so //most awesome. Most awesome is a service that produces a conversation between @HarryReid and @ladygaga. Most awesome is also that the conversation is about a crucial advance in social justice. Replying to @mlaconvention Oh, it got there eventually. I was thinking, hey, they want more survey data, fine, and discussion groups, ok, and then!$$\$!

That's not how that story generally ends these days. I was waiting for "and they arrested him."

Someone on my block plays the cello. God, I love it here.

No. Effing. Way.

I am speechless.

Hey, @striphas: http://bit.ly/d2ipuA

Color me gobsmacked.

Flabber. Gasted.

I can only imagine. I've been bouncing back and forth between deep jealousy and horrible sadness about it all day.

I do indeed hope that there is some grievous error here. Because, ugh.

Amazing!

You would think. I'm mostly surprised by realizing how disappointed I'll be in the OBC if this turns out to be true.

@jbj Happy birthday! I hope it's a great one.

Trying to cut about 15 minutes out of a talk. I am not good at cutting. I always seem to revise longer.

You & me both. Even the potential truth of it has already put me through an emotional wringer.

Yeah, I know. I find something dismaying about that - the need to seek closure in such an abusive relationship...

I am perversely hoping that he will behave as badly as I have come to expect him to.

And not a moment too soon!

Fantastically cool. Congratulations!

Oh, for fuck's sake. http://mhpbooks.com/mobylives/?p=17795

I'm not sure what to be most disgusted by. But Macmillan raising the book price ranks right up there.

I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. That seems to have been a mistake.

It will. I'm now frankly hoping for a slow-motion train crash. Will send more info via other channels.

This is not at all about disappointment that he's "sold out," or whatever. This is about disappointment that she's willing to forget [+]

his sexist, classist, utterly boorish behavior. In the interest of what? Tying up loose ends in her last season? If her audience didn't [+]

need to be subjected to that attitude 9 years ago, why is it different now?

My apologies, all. I'll stop ranting, I promise. But I'm just livid. And wondering what idealistic notion has been punctured to produce it.

I would be comforted by that idea if I really thought he were capable of something like an emotion.

Thanks for the heads-up. It's an unlikely scenario but good to protect against!

Colossal. You'll have to take my word on that.

Oof. That interview really is like crossing the streams.

No question, absolutely. I just haven't had to deal up close & in person with her, so I've gotten to hold onto illusion there.

That's undoubtedly part of it, but I'm not sure it's all of it. It's also my desire to understand the OBC as a popular [+]

literacy project, one that really understood what its members wanted from reading and used that power to promote a deeper [+]

engagement with books.

I'm definitely thinking about it. Once I calm down, there will have to be writing in order for me to sort it out.

That's got to be it. Ted Striphas's The Late Age of Print has an amazing chapter on the OBC if you haven't read it.

Ted negotiated the CC-licensed version in his contract; stats actually say that making the text available for free [+]

increases sales, as folks start reading the pdf and want a hard copy. So ask away! It might help the publishers!

No, there are actual studies. As Michael Jensen has said, you might lose a few sales, but the increased exposure is worth it.

But yes, iPad orientation, certainly. Piece of cake.

Yeah, early adopting is my worst vice. Or at least my most expensive one.

Yeah, I drive a 1998 Civic, so we can be pretty sure that that's not my vice.

That's great to know - thanks!

Probably, alas. Another time!

No worries. I am officially Off the Topic.

Last prep before talk at the Hemi. There are a lot of chairs in here.

You are far too kind...

And we're on. Full room!

The Hemispheric Institute. Folks in New York are in a hurry, you know; must abbrev.

Thanks all for the good wishes; the talk went exceedingly well, and to a not-even-standing-room crowd.

My favorite moment: I mention the MLA Task Force on the Evaluation of Scholarship for Tenure and Promotion; huge lightning crash.

Thanks so much for coming! It was awfully dramatic, wasn't it?

I'm sorry you weren't able to make it, too; it was a great discussion.

I hope you said hello to my friends in the black t-shirt department for me.

Some days you expect the trip to the airport to take an hour & it's an hour and a half. Some days you leave super-early & it takes an hour.

First time I've traveled since I've been off coffee. I almost don't know what to do with myself.

Also traveling without the laptop. Just the iPad and the iPhone.

It was necessitated by a stomach ailment, but now the green tea and I are quite cozy together. No one is more surprised than I am.

I keep hoping for the day when starting to write a new article isn't ridiculously painful.

The part I find easy is dreaming up the article. The actual process of beginning to write the first paragraphs, not so much.

Exactly. It'll become less painful once I've found my way in, but right now getting everything set up is just excruciating.

Thanks to the magic of VLC for the iPad and a certain distributed network, I have this past week's Mad Men to watch on my flight.

So. Freaking. Excited. No more converting all those .avi files!

Hey, so, if you live somewhere you can catch CUNY TV, I'm going to be on $$talking open review w/KRowe$$ tonight: Brian Lehrer, 7pm, I think.

Hey, anybody remember the recent stat about the number of papers submitted for peer review in biology each day/hour/whatever?

Alas, she was only on Skype, and I didn't have a chance to talk with her. But next time I see her, absolutely!

My pleasure! I'd love to talk & hear what you have planned...

Am super ecstatic that the woman hacking up a lung on my flight home yesterday seems to have been so generous with her germs.

Definitely do not. Especially not an annual Fall Program Committee Meeting Bronchitis Attack.

If I am contagious enough, you may be greeting me via Twitter. :(

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: thank you, universe, for laundry pickup and delivery.

Hey, #SCMS folks: did you get a membership renewal reminder this year? I didn't. And did your dues go up by 30%? Mine did. What gives?

And it's fully integrated with Google Maps so you can sketch out your course on the website.

Hmm. I haven't noticed mismeasurement, but I'm not sure I would have...

Ah, I can see that would be an issue. I've only used it in NYC, so...

The question is whether Old Navy falls into that category.

So: 2-day-long meeting, done. Crappy germs from hacking woman on plane, lingering. But almost taken care of by martinis, so there's that.

Damn. I'm impressed. I once bought a Versace skirt that had been marked down by like 400% at Nordstrom Rack, but that's it.

I can see it. I, on the other hand, wouldn't know Belgian-designed menswear if I chipped a tooth on it.

I've made it down to inbox 1! Of course, I managed it by finding myself with 19 items on my Taskforce to-do list, but...

In battle with nasty cold, cold appears to have gained the upper hand. Am retreating to bed with iPad for the rest of the day.

So I've heard, but I'll confess to mild terror at the thought. Probably need to get over that.

Many thanks. Must recover quickly!

Briefly reachieved verticality to go to the store for orange juice and other supplies. Now making soup and beginning to crumple again.

Indeed! I've been watching the work sprints with awe & envy today. Must schedule another such day when I am over this cold.

Right! In the meantime, I am using the excuse of this cold to Read a Novel. Shocking!

Thanks! I'm sure this will pass quickly, though not quickly enough...

Thanks so much! I ran out for supplies this afternoon & am pretty well stocked now.

I'm trying to breathe. Not going as well as I'd like.

Not unless you're already on the east coast. Which you may be! It's hard to keep up.

That is a most adorable kitten. I love grown-up cats but the little ones always make me regret that they don't stay shoulder-sized.

I'll see you then. By which time I fully intend be germ-free. Or at least drowning the last ones in whisky.

Excellent.

Whoa: something's run amuck in my system again and has eaten 160+ GB of disk space. Checking logs...

Have reloaded Concentrate for tasks that need doing in preparation for the back-to-work push. May even actually start shortly.

There's a 50% educational discount if you write to ask. But I find the enforced discipline helpful!

According to their FAQ, one license is good for one copy running at a time $$so multiple machines would be ok$$.

Procrastination! My favorite app! :)

They've got a very generous trial period $$60 hours of work$$ so test it out!

Recovered enough from the cold of doom today that I managed to knock three things off the to do list, which has earned me a lazy evening.

That's the plan - thanks!

Hang in there! A little more accomplishment now = more restful sleep later.

For me it's more like delayed gratification and the Protestant work ethic: I know I'll pay for a nap now with lousy sleep later.

Well, that worked, then!

Not sure I can do this in 140ch. Lots of options, but would be helpful to have folks familiar with format take the lead.

Also, in many institutions, some semblance of shared governance accrues to TT faculty but not #alt-ac/contingent.

Sorry I missed this earlier -- would love to chat today/tmw/Weds. I have questions! Will DM my number.

It's great that this exists at UVa but there's nothing of the sort at my inst. Very few nonTT folks have the vote.

Dear Benefits Administration: I fail to see how removing key options from my retirement account qualifies the program as "newly enhanced."

Silly me. It's enhanced with simplicity!

Left the apt with umbrella still in my bag. Got half a block down & had a 70ish man offer me his. Love this place.

I'm a little behind today, but many congrats and all best thoughts to you and your family!

Congratulations!

Hey, congrats! $$It's good to be full of something, and "it" is useful ballast\.$$

Evernote, you've let me down. $$Made extensive notes at home toward the PH post I need to write; now finding they apparently did not sync\.$$

The question is whether it's better to recreate from memory or to go home and see if the notes are there.

Okay, home it is. Brain too foggy to reproduce yesterday's ideas. Notes, you better still be there when I get home.

The good news: notes are indeed present on home machine. The bad news: have discovered MobileMe account has been hacked. Gah.

Hmmm. Notes for blog post didn't sync because Evernote says the content isn't valid. Used TextExpander snippets; is that the problem?

Yeah, found that out after a long wait for support. An error msg other than "your password has been reset" would be better.

Is all okay; was apparently a server crash. Suggested that some error msg other than "your password has been reset!" might be good.

I can't say that I figured it out, but things seem to be syncing now. I reconstructed one problematic note & all appears ok.

If it's the same one I got last week, start powering the zinc; it's no fun but it should pass quickly. $$Sorry you're sick\!$$

Chrome made me loosen my death grip on Zotero a bit. Being between research projects helped. But I can't wait for Zotero Anywhere!

I was simultaneously inspired and massively envious, being trapped in a cold-induced haze at the time. But this week! I'm on it!

See you there! #ir11

Almost makes me wish I had a kid to put one on!

Still trying to decide how I feel about the ads for the new season of InTreatment using an utterly unironic cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy.

That's a VERY funny idea, indeed.

Fantastic news - congratulations on this first step! Now onward!

The draft of the article I'm working on now is really bad. But it's a rickety structure around which I can see something good building.

$$I hope\.$$

It's one of my favorite Voyager projects, alongside Roy Rosenzweig's Who Built America.

$$FYI, rumor has it that if:book did a proof\-of\-concept port of Maus into Sophie\. So the texts are in theory recoverable\.$$

That would be absolutely brilliant. And you're right about the "in theory" part; Sophie may wind up in the same boat.

Will. Be. There!

My favorite is the W4th station: ABCDEF, um, M.

Fantastic news! Thanks for letting me know.

No.

Sorry, I was being "funny." The negative in your question made it ambiguous and seemed to call out for the negative response.

Honestly, I think it depends on the issue: there are probably some provable negatives, and some that can't be proven.

Hey, excellent; that date I can actually make!

Just got a really nice set of speakers for my computer as a late birthday gift; amazing how much more I want to listen to music now.

Much appreciated!

Bose Music Monitor. Non-cheap, but really good. Quite rich sound for small speakers with no subwoofer.

Welcome back!

Tired is getting the better of me. Am crashing with the iPad, and will back for DC in the morning. See some of you tomorrow.

Knocking some stuff off the old to-do list before hitting the road - um, the rails - for Archiving Social Media. http://bit.ly/9JXhOI

Conveniently, I'll need one on this end to make it to the subway without drowning.

Not when it's 110 degrees there, no. I'll take the rain. But ask me that question again in February.

Standing in Penn Station waiting for the train, having massive grad school flashbacks to the two years R. was in DC. Weird to do this again.

Happily, I stopped being busted flat in Baton Rouge in 1991. :)

Uh-oh. Had a brilliant idea a couple of days ago for my next big project. Except I think I'm reading it right now, and it's not by me.

There's likely still room for me to do some work. But it'll require a little rethinking. Which is probably not a bad thing at all.

Yes, absolutely; I have a few blog posts in the works $$or at least on the to\-do list$$.

New post: Upcoming Dates http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/upcoming-dates/

Whoa. Flooding on tracks just north of Baltimore Penn Station.

Yes, just very slowly. But I'm headed south - I think one set of tracks is shut down, and it may be affecting northbound trains.

I have been having that fantasy, too. It may be supplanted by whisky.

Hi, from a southbound train heading to Washington DC!

Okay, I think this book I'm reading is not my project after all; it bears retain things in common with it, but there's lots to push against.

Looks like it should be clear by then, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too!

Welcome! I'm waiting for the metro to Vienna. See you soon.

See you there shortly!

It should be cleared up by then; it wasn't deep but was enough to slow things down a lot.

Okay, am at the Mason Inn, which is pretty swell. Starting to think about food...

Good to know; thanks!

In the Well, behind the bar. Looking forward to seeing any other #asome folks who might be around.

Fab. @jcmeloni should be arriving not long after.

Dude. You are in TRINIDAD. There is no being jealous when you're in Trinidad. $$But it would be lovely if you were here\.$$

Great - we're behind the bar.
