Lots of issues, but for one, dark archives would defuse IRB concerns, making clear that archive = texts, not "people." #asome

RT @JenHoward: Will some eager UK reader plow through the recalled text of "Freedom" & pick out the differences btw it and the approved one?

RT @jwolman: @kfitz Let's let our silicon organs handle that one: OCR + compare documents in a word processing program.

I just need an unpulped copy. Oh, and a copy of the corrected version. And then something to get the taste out of my mouth.

I was just happy to be there to witness it all. Also, that *someone* smelled like baby unicorns.

My eyebrows were merely arched in recognition and agreement. #asome

Nice!

It's going to be a whirlwind, that's for sure!

Oh, Jo! How awful - I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you're okay.

It has been long enough since I've had a day to work that I've completely forgotten what I'm doing here.

Every time I travel I wonder about that. It would be a good Photosynth extension, I think, to be able to search for yourself.

Ugh. I don't even want to think about that.

The degree to which this is true is pretty much the degree to which I'm actually in DH, I think.

I thought my ears were burning. Would love to hear about it!

Nice! What was the response to your argument like?

Final sentences are really hard. And they get harder as a project gets longer; it's hard to balance an entire book on such a little point.

Ooh, no. I just looked: it was "blues." $$Sort of\. I ended with a quotation, which was followed by a citation\. Bad dissertator\!$$

What I really want to end with is "do it, dammit."

I wish I could take credit. A favorite quotation: "One need not have suffered to sing the postmodern blues."

I think I managed to avoid ending this thing with the phrase "into the future." Whew.

That final sentence? "Change is coming, with or without us, and the choice is ours: we can work to create a scholarly communication [+]

environment that will help new ideas thrive, or we can watch our current publishing system die, allowing the profession to become not [+]

just obsolete, but irrelevant, silenced." [-]

My feeling: the rhythm is still off. It's got too many phrases, and yet the final one is one item too short.

Hmmm. Good idea!

Perhaps. I'm striving for exhortation but it makes me nervous, esp in the last sentence of the book.

Yeah, I think I'm attached to ending on the negative, too. It's the "or else" that feels most motivating, for better or for worse.

Except that in this case the future I'm projecting doesn't exist yet. What I'm basically arguing is "build it or die."

I hope that's what the whole book has done! And the thrust of the last few paragraphs has been not change-in-this-way [+]

but instead change-is-the-only-constant. Embrace change!

Perhaps it's that analogy I need. I'll ponder.

I love that I left Twitter frustrated with my sentence, off to meet a friend for drinks, & return to many awesome stabs at a better one.

The funny thing is that before I left I did break it into three sentences, first the part before the colon, and last: Silenced.

Ha! I totally understand the issues of 140ch. Thanks for the ideas; I think they're bang-on, so to speak.

You rock. I mean, we rock. I mean, thanks!

Where @plragde is absolutely right, and where I felt the rhythm off, is in the need for the sentence to end in a three.

Thanks!

All of my Google calendars except my primary one are gone. This is not a happy thing.

Is that access no longer controlled by the dept chair? Or is it now automatically available?

My landlord just came in and pulled the a/c out and closed the window. Good grief but it's quiet in here now!

I'd say no, but that infighting sometimes looks pretty irrelevant to those on the outside.

Or, to put it better, what we know to be serious critical debates sometimes look to the outside like irrelevant infighting.

Yes, exactly.

While I wasn't paying attention, BackType Connect for WP got retired. http://is.gd/fTaci Need to find a replacement.

Will do -- and backatcha.

3 of 6 missing calendars are back, at last. Come on, GCal!

All of my calendars are back, at last. Thank goodness. Now to figure out a better backup strategy.

I told you that adulteration would come to no good. $$Or was it the fact that you were drinking Irish?$$

That figures; more Brit abuse of the Irish. :) For the record, I oppose @jbj's method of adulteration as well. Neat, only.

I figured! The funny part is that I'm actually more Italian than I am Irish. Even with this name.

Whoa. My brain just exploded.

Fair enough, and sorry for the false attribution! I took your "ice only" to be your own preference rather than a limit of toleration.

Have been experimenting w/ #newtwitter as my primary interface for a week now. I like it overall, like having it in a pinned Chrome tab. [+]

But a few annoyances: want full convo in right column when I click on an @-reply. Want Mentions to highlight when something new appears. [+]

Want a Quote option in addition to Retweet. And want option to maintain place when new tweets load, rather than having to scroll down.

Interestingly, these are all in the Twitter iPhone/iPad app.

Yeah, I'm with you; the irritations are beginning to take over my attention here. #newtwitter

I'd tried a bunch of 3rd party clients but had settled into Tweetie, pretty exclusively.

If you're asking if I'll leave the browser client set to #newtwitter rather than reverting, yes. But may go back to Tweetie.

No worries - just wanted to keep us in the mix!

See, but, two tabs? Way too clunky. $$Also, pinned tabs don't show the number\.$$

@samplereality I do not know why this JUST NOW occurred to me, but $$a$$ I love your blog audit post on PH, and $$b$$ an AWESOME way of [+]

Fantastic post-talk dinner in Rochester. Small but energized crowd for the talk itself. Great conversations lined up for tmw. Now, crashing.

I didn't know you were on the Twitters! Thanks for coming this evening; sorry we didn't get to talk more, but soon, okay?

Three words: Duck. Fat. Frites.

Lento. Really, really good. If Sara was at the talk, she didn't introduce herself, so I'm not sure...

Alas, there's no chance: breakfast & lunch meetings tmw, and then back on a plane! But next time, definitely.

I hate it when that happens.

Absolutely!

Thanks -- and thanks so much for coming yesterday. I hope we'll get to talk another time.

Fantastic meetings today @ RIT & lovely time hanging out w/ @mamamusings. But flight is now being held at ROC, srsly messing with my plans.

1hr delay makes it impossible for me to get to wkend retreat in time for dinner. Not sure what will still be available when I get there. :(

Planes, trains, and automobiles, not necessarily in that order. $$More like automobile, plane, train, train, train, train\.$$

This is the last leg. May there be a restaurant still open in this quaint little town when I arrive. Please.

It's the train in Spain you have to worry about; it goes vainly from the plane.

So having finally made it to Cold Spring, and being half a beer into dinner, I'm finally relaxed & excited about this writing retreat.

Which is to say, work sprints tomorrow, if anybody's up for it.

Yes! Arrived in the pitch black, alas, but it looks lovely.

Love it.

Okay, back at it. Starting a 30-minute work sprint at 10.15 eastern, if you're with me.

And... time. I finished re-reading and taking notes on an article. And you?

In a good way, I hope?

Whoa. That would do it.

That's awesome. Congrats!

Thanks for the appeal to the Game on my behalf; it clearly helped!

FRA. At passport control, a polizei tried to convince me that NYC is too dangerous. Filled with Talibans and snipers, apparently.

EWR. Phew.

Oh, no! I'm happy to be back, though I'd somewhat adjusted to 38-and-rainy, and am surprised to find it thus warm here!

PS: Feel better!

This one is definitely going in the record books as a Very Weird Day. Was that me in the Göteborg bus station with the cops and the guns?

My ridiculous week: back from Sweden today. Meetings all day Tues. Weds eve pres at New School. All day mtg at MLA Thurs. Fly to Boston Fri.

Home indeed! I loved Göteborg $$all of it except the bus station at 5am$$ and #ir11 was awesome, but it's good to be back.

At least I get tomorrow to recover. But when I'm going to get my Weds/Fri presentations finished, I'm not exactly sure.

Thanks!

I'm quite excited about it. And I've even managed to do most of the reading!

Happily, part of it wasn't exactly new to me. :)

Second best part of getting home: new running shoes here waiting for me. And they're the right size this time! Will test them out tomorrow.

I ordered them from roadrunnersports.com. You need to know what shoe you need; if you don't, best to go get fitted at a store.

Run fast, jump high! Really looking forward to testing them out tomorrow.

I usually run in fairly heavy-duty motion control shoes, given my crap arches, so there's not much squish in mine, alas.

Nice! I'm actually testing out a new model entirely. Going to take it easy on the treadmill tmw before hitting pavement.

@academicdave I want to talk running shoes with you at #mla11; I'm increasingly dubious but have had arch-related injuries & complaints.

Yes, am home, thank goodness. Will keep an eye out!

I'm just hoping that I'm breaking them in rather than vice versa.

Is there ginger ale in that?

I had one neat $$i\.e\., the proper way$$ at the end of dinner, and am going to have another now.

Unfortunately, I'm not back up to racing yet, in any sense - still just trying to build strength & endurance. Maybe this spring!

Maybe not heathen, per se, but certainly no Maloney.

So there's reading I should really do tonight. But I think the iPad is mostly going to be a viewing device tonight. I'll read tomorrow.

LA's the perfect place for it!

The minimalist shoes thing $$less the V5Fs than the Frees$$ has me rethinking how my arch issues have been treated.

I just want to point out that I made it to 9pm. After having woken up 24 hours ago & nearly requiring an ODH extraction shortly thereafter.

My fear was crashing at 8 and waking up at 3, which is all too likely. I'm giving it another 15 minutes or so and then I'm down.

You guys rock. Certainly made what could have been some un-fun moments this morning much more amusing!

You know the conv center is on the LA marathon route; might be useful for a long run.

It's all roads, of course, but it should be manageable, esp. if early in the morning.

@marcparry: @academicdave is dedicated. I am not. I am really just trying to get myself running again & not being entirely successful at it.

Okay, now it's 20 minutes later than I really needed to stay up until. Good night, US twitter folk, and see you tomorrow.

Wow. Went to bed at 10, and woke up at 2.30, thinking, oh no. And then woke up again at 4, at 5.30, and at 8.30. Am actually up now.

Now waiting for tea to steep so that I can be awake as well.

New post: Peer-to-Peer Review and Its Aporias http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/peer-to-peer-review-and-its-aporias/

I find it terrifying. And realize that I need to make much more religious use of my VPN.

Congratulations! So sorry not to be there to raise a glass with you.

Am right on the cusp of making the decision to attend DH2011 without presenting. It's not as though I'd be able to get it paid for, anyhow.

Thanks! I'll look forward to reading.

I'm still not 100% convinced that they're no longer meaningful, but I do think they've become banal, which is worth noting.

If the zombie is a figure for the narcotized subject of late capitalism, its banality reflects that we are all that subject.

Which is in its own way a really important thing to note.

http://www.lacan.com/zizdazedandconfused.html

Ha. Zizek has always already written an essay on the zombie.

Does it work if you're using a VPN?

I will hope. It's the kind of thing that really makes me rethink how casual I've become about wireless network use...

Thanks, Ted!

Works perfectly; thanks!

For those of you who used BackType Connect to pull Twitter posts into your blog comments, there's an excellent new fork: http://is.gd/gkfXc

Yay! Congratulations to all!

Yay! Looking forward to it.

Safe travels!

Thank you! So glad to hear it. Now MAKE IT HAPPEN, Goog.

Damn. The pressure's on. Wait! Now more pressure!

I will use my 5000th tweet to say thanks to all of you: This community of scholars and smarty-pants folks continues to inspire me every day.

Oh, crap. So sorry!

I may or may not have installed firesheep today in order to see whether anything was visible over NYU's closed wifi. $$It wasn't\.$$

Just discovered that $$a$$ the pay network in this tea shop is totally firesheepable, and [+]

$$b$$ I didn't have it configured properly before, so need to test the NYU network again. $$PS: this thing is scary\.$$

Interesting fact: used Boingo to log onto tea shop pay network; fired up VPN; lost connection to wifi. When I reconnected, my VPN [+]

automatically, and though I'm now logged off of Boingo, I'm still online.[-]

Wait! I was using VPN & watching firesheep, & my own Google id $$running in Chrome$$ came up! Was it captured in the machine or over the air?

Yeah, not that, unfortunately. It's the Firefox plugin announced yesterday that basically lets you grab anyone's info off open wifi.

Firesheep somehow just captured my Google id even though $$a$$ I'm on VPN, and $$b$$ I have nothing Google open. Freaked out; going offline.

Basically it sniffs your login info as you use FB, Twitter, etc. Lets them log in as you. $$Am now on iPhone 3G, not wifi\.$$

Hmmm. I wonder if Ff has my Google acct saved somewhere. I'll delete cookies...

How's your knee? You holding up?

Must have been the cookies; deleted & no sign of me. Still unnerved that my sessions are captured when I'm logged into VPN, tho.

I think. What I need is two machines side by side, one logged into VPN, to see what the other can capture.

Ugh. Also need to test out using iPad while monitoring Firesheep.

I'm so sorry. I'd send Vicodin if it would get there in time. Or, you know, if I had any. Sending good thoughts instead...

I want to say that I may have looked at it at some point, but I could sure use a refresher!

Exactly what I was afraid of. Is there a VPN client for iPad?

Where are you now, @jcmeloni? Are you at least partaking of adulterated whisky to get you through?

Ach. Airborne. I forget that airlines other than mine have that fancy in-air wifi. Will you be able to get comfortable in SEA-TAC?

Figured out that it was google.com that was in http rather than https; if yr logged in & google sthg yr acct cd be open.

You said it; it's sticky down here, too. I did request actual fall crispness for Friday's trip, so...

Two nights of stress dreams. Feeling overwhelmed by my to-do list. And I'm supposed to be on sabbatical! How did I get myself into this?

In happier news, the 1Password Chrome plugin has made a huge advance as of today.

Also, one of those good-news/bad-news situations: the good news is that my property taxes have dropped almost $1K over the last two years. The bad news is that there's a reason why my property taxes have dropped almost$1K over the last two years.

Oh, good lord! I'm glad to know you're fine, but how terrifying!

Okay, figured out a crucial part of how to manage a project with a very impending due date. Now to do the actual managing.

Alas, I think "manage" was misleading. What I figured out is specific to *this* project. Oh, if it were only transferable!

Must figure out how to do that. But YES, absolutely.

There's always a catch, isn't there?

RT @mlaconvention: NYU grads get another chance to vote to unionize: http://chronicle.com/article/Labor-Board-Gives-NYU-Graduate/125135/

@mkgold Just catching up here -- but wow! Congratulations!

Home from all-day meeting at MLA. Need to go run. Need to finish slides for tomorrow. Need to take nap. Guess which one is winning?

Sadly, it did not work out that way. Decided it was too late to nap, so goofed around for an hour instead. Now to work!

Futzing with slides goes better with a nice bit of Jameson.

Boy, I should have clarified. Yes, the whisky, thank goodness.

I wonder how the Chron would feel about that?

Replying to @jbj and @midwinter_

I think you meant to say Irish.

We can certainly meet up where bourbon is concerned. And possibly over a Lagavulin.

Ooh nice.

Whoa.

Have finished reworking tomorrow's talk. Now, packing and sleep.

And with that, I'm down to three overdue items on my to-do list, and eleventy-billion upcoming deadlines.

Why is Gowalla convinced that I'm at CLT instead of LGA?

On the shuttle to Boston. See some of you there!

The view from my hotel room in Boston. No kidding. http://yfrog.com/emmmndj

So sorry you weren't able to make it! I hope you $$metaphorically$$ caught that truck.

@jwacooks A wonderful dinner, indeed. Thanks so much for it & for your hospitality today. I'll look forward to the next opportunity!

Funny thing is I just went downstairs & grabbed a Jameson, whereupon a waiter nearly ran into me, causing me to spill part of it.

For a packed bar in a fancy hotel, I think it's the closest outcome.

Thought of both @mlaconvention and @samplereality when I added this image to the slides for today's talk: http://is.gd/gtcYi

Wow, another huge interface leap for @1Password for Chrome. Nice!

In contrast with last week's room in Sweden, the hotel room I'm currently in is bigger than my NYC apartment. Alas, only one night here.

Pondering costume for tomorrow night. Torn between "academic on sabbatical," "woman four weeks overdue for a haircut," and [+]

"hey, it's finally cool enough to wear my black leather jacket!" [-]

That's kinda what I'm thinking.

It's actually a bit nicer now. They've implemented most of the FF/Safari features. A few issues yet, but it's pretty cool.

Replying to @samplereality and @brettbobley

Oh, drag. Sorry about that! I'm sure it'll be coming, though.

Thanks for the offer; I have breakfast included with my room, & then am off. Next time, though!

I was thinking about the other day, sadly enough. Also, that the post-pushback video shows you how to store your carryon bags.

Goals for today: read. Sleep. Maybe run. That is pretty much all.

Yes! My flight's at 2; I'll probably show up there about 12.30.

Just had my first chance to make the choice between the intrusive body scan & the intrusive pat down. Went for the scan. Enjoy the pics, TSA

I have run. I have obtained a serious haircut. That is all I intend to accomplish today; now back to my scheduled lolling about.
