The one day that everyone was still awake when I'd normally have gotten up, I slept until 9. Ah well - happy new year, all

I have just spent a very pleasant hour reorganizing my Chrome bookmarks. Now I think I'll read a novel. Ah, holidays.

Hey, happy new year. I hope it's starting well for you!

New post: Twenty-Eleven http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/twenty-eleven/

2011 ate my blog archives. Not really, but it apparently hosed the WP Collapsing Archives plugin; all previous years are now inside 2011.

I take it back; it's not the Collapsible Archives plugin's fault. It looks like WP. I've switched plugins but have the same problem.

Looks like there's yet another WP release that'll hit soon; plugin pages describe compatibility with WP3.1.

Never mind; was a collapsing archives problem after all, coupled with a cache that wouldn't clear. All's well with new plugin.

I love that this is all stuff that falls into the category of "important enough to fit into the car for the crosscountry drive."

That sounds about right to me.

Hey, @goodreads doesn't block non-US IP addresses, does it? I can't get the site to load, but http://bit.ly/e1OaB6 says it's just me...

Hmm. Maybe it's the ISP here in Dublin. Thanks!

Hmm. I'm in Dublin. Maybe it's an ISP thing?

Interesting. I never get a response, in any browser.

Yikes! Please feel better soon!

There's also Friday morning, of course. The good news is that the time zone should work in your favor.

Morning, folks.

New post: Homeward Bound, At Least Sorta http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/homeward-bound-at-least-sorta/

NO! And I'm bummed about it. I have seen pictures though, and they both look good.

$$The pictures, though\.\.\. I'm trying not to focus too much on the questions they raise\. Like "where's my dining room table?"$$

I'm not all that worried about it. Mostly just curious about its whereabouts. It's a pretty big table & wd usu be in the pix.

Hey, @jcmeloni: you would not BELIEVE what I'm about to drink.

There was adulteration. It's pretty good!

Oh no! Feel better, Bethany!

Woo-hoo! Congrats, at last!

Morning, folks. About to start the long journey: DUB-EWR-LAX-#MLA11. See some of you there.

Likewise!

Thanks & will do!

Wow, you're awake early. Regular insomnia or pneumomnia?

Ugh - I'm so sorry. I hope the meds kick in quickly, and that all of you are well soonest!

New post: Nothing to Be Done http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/nothing-to-be-done/

EWR.

No, 1055 in about 3 hrs. Safe travels!

Will be arriving at LAX for #mla11 at 7.30pm; anybody else showing up around then and want to share a cab?

On plane for LAX and #mla11. Sneaking suspicion that there's a nap in my future.

Attempting to make a correction to a blog post via the WP mobile app $$bc the iPhone is my only connection$$ hosed all the formatting. Thanks!

Well, that post will be borked for six hours, as I can't fix it until I can connect with the laptop.

LAX.

Srsly annoyed to discover that while Marriott hotels are Boingo hotspots, the JW Marriott is not. [+]

So now the dance of the ridiculously expensive hotel wifi begins. [-]

Yup. There will be wifi at the conf, but in room it's .

$12.95/day. Replying to @jcmeloni You are SO RIGHT. Time to commit some alterations to the phone, I think. Replying to @nowviskie I'm so sorry, Bethany! It's the right choice, though. I hope you start feeling better soon. Replying to @nowviskie That would be fabulous; it would be great to have your voice present. Will get someone to keep an eye on the Twitter stream, too. Replying to @nancybaym Have had several friends whose email has been hacked "send" such messages. Almost certainly not true, but I can see why it works! Replying to @BryanAlexander Actually, the connectivity has been pretty good so far, but then the MLA masses have not yet arrived... Replying to @BryanAlexander Both of the hotels I stayed at in Europe, however, were a disaster of exactly that variety. Insane prices and awful connex. Yo, #MLA11 folks: this conference uses both the Marriott and the JW Marriott hotels. If you want people to meet in the JW, please be clear! New post: <rant> http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/rant/ Replying to @jcmeloni I hear you. I had exactly the same not-wanting-to-come this year: I just want to go home and be still. Replying to @wynkenhimself Amen. I was just thinking exactly this. Replying to @wynkenhimself Excellent! Replying to @swarthmoreburke Because they don't want to? Replying to @jcmeloni Hey. Replying to @tanyaclement That ain't right. Replying to @nowviskie When is 309? Would be happy to oblige if I'm not elsewhere! Replying to @jcmeloni Maybe they were just trying to save you from adulteration. Replying to @jcmeloni Sure, but that's the thing about being Irish Catholic. Confess your sins & pledge to sin no more, and it's like it never happened. Replying to @jcmeloni So you can do it again next weekend with a clear conscience. Jet lag has hit: woke up after 2.5hrs sleep; gave up on trying to get back to sleep after another 1.5hrs. This may be an interesting day. Replying to @jcmeloni Not. At. All. Woke up before 3 am like it was a normal thing to do. Replying to @acavender Ooh! Thanks for the alert. Was just wondering when there might be an update! Replying to @acavender Guess this means I need to update to 10.6.6, though. Replying to @acavender The old Window > Open in New Window isn't there? Replying to @acavender Fantastic - I've been hoping for a good update! Replying to @acavender Wow, you're right. It's gorgeous. Replying to @acavender Can't find it. I begin to fear they've done away with it. Replying to @mlaconvention Oh yeah. And I practice every day, so I'm really good at it! Replying to @mlaconvention Ha. If only. Running on 2.5hrs sleep. Not sure when I'll get to eat lunch. Combo entitled me to big cholesterol breakfast. Yum. One thing I'm discovering, though: Ireland has completely ruined butter for me. Replying to @annettemarkham Yes. I'll be dreaming about Irish butter for weeks. Speaking of Irish butter, the waistband of my skirt was suspiciously hard to fasten this morning. Someone must have shrunk it. Replying to @sramsay Works for me! Replying to @sherah1918 Happily, I just finished eating breakfast, or I'd be drooling. Replying to @sramsay Kind of figured, but heck, add salt anyhow. Replying to @sramsay If it doesn't, it should. Replying to @sramsay Alternate ending: I think that's the recipe for Bailey's Irish Cream. Replying to @mamamusings Super cool, eh? #MLA11 folks: super-secret passcode for wifi at the JW Marriott is mla2011. Replying to @halavais I swear this kid is preternaturally grown up. Replying to @shanakimball and @courant48 Hi, and welcome! Replying to @courant48 Thank you! Replying to @mlaconvention Was temporarily. Back on now. Replying to @mlaconvention You see me when I'm sleeping? You know when I'm awake? Have been off the twitters for hours. Anything happen at #mla11 while I was gone? RT @jcmeloni: First up tomorrow at #mla11 : New $$& Renewed$$ Work in Digital Lit Studies: An Electronic Roundtable ... Plaza I, JW Marrio ... Replying to @jcmeloni No way. Replying to @jcmeloni Clearly I am still 6 hours behind. Replying to @mlaconvention and @jbj Young, adaptable, *and* experienced. That's... both flattering and alarming. Managed three hours of sleep before finding myself Awake. I sense a major crash coming - but it must wait until after 3. $$Preferably 5\!$$ Replying to @mlaconvention Dinner plans. Sigh. But I hope to collapse early. Just not too early! Replying to @jcmeloni Clearly! Replying to @mlaconvention Yes, absolutely! And a huge part of why we lobbied so hard for wifi. Thanks again; it's getting good use! #mla11 #newtools Replying to @jcmeloni Need stickers! Replying to @nowviskie Haven't seen any yet; I'll have to pester him! Great crowd at DH demo session! #mla11 http://yfrog.com/h63r8hj Replying to @nowviskie and @ryancordell I had asked an #alt-ac question, which was followed by the sound of crickets. Replying to @nowviskie and @sramsay rocked, though you were ENORMOUSLY missed. Replying to @jcmeloni You're not downstairs in the JW again, are you? What is with that bar? Replying to @jcmeloni Boo indeed! Realizing belatedly $$reading the stream$$ how much I missed in the #309 discussion; wish I could have read along in real time. #mla11 Interesting $$and sad$$ how moderating a discussion took my head out of that discussion. I plead ongoing jet lag. #mla11 Replying to @fraistat and @briancroxall Thanks, you guys! Survived until 5. Now the big question: nap before 7pm dinner? Or a drink? #mla11 #dilemmas Replying to @mariabustillos Thank you for coming and being so awesome. Replying to @jcmeloni Good to know! Got a slew of messages telling me about spam comments in my moderation queue last night, but there's nothing there. Unnerving. Woke up about 4.45 today, but stayed in bed reading and playing Plants vs Zombies. Less unpleasant than it could have been. Replying to @jcmeloni Excellent. Am having a hard time getting myself moving this morning. Some exhaustion from intense 4 days; some from ongoing, demoralizing conflicts. Am a peacemaker deep at heart and hate that I raised conflicts by attempting to address them. Replying to @readywriting Thank you! Replying to @academicdave The crash started last night, but really set in this morning. Looking forward to offline hours on the plane tomorrow. Replying to @nowviskie Well, that's better, I guess? Okay, now, this suitcase I've been living out of for the last four weeks: send it all out to be cleaned? Or just burn it and start over? Just discovered what the source of that smell was. Replying to @jeanburgess I hope you're up high enough, too, and that you're safe and dry... The good news: after four weeks of eating on the road, including two weeks in major beer capitals of the world, I am only up about a pound. No, that's all. Just the good news. That is probably so.

Pretty much, yeah.

May have to happen at some point, if I have any more difficulty stifling myself.

You got it.

New post: Does Tenure Undermine Academic Freedom? http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/does-tenure-undermine-academic-freedom/

Replying to @tcarmody and @samplereality

Really, I think everyone should teach undergrads. Perhaps a shifting research-teaching balance, though.

Replying to @tcarmody and @samplereality

Yes, absolutely, and academic freedom itself is about more than just risk-taking. Still an interesting thought exp.

So untenuring the tenured? Under what kinds of circumstances?

Yeah, that's different, but interesting nonetheless.

Good grief; that's some heady company!

Replying to @mkirschenbaum and @joguldi

Ditto both of those.

Indeed. Just re-read it for a seminar here, and boy, it's even more relevant now.

That's funny, because I may or may not have just poured myself a Jameson & ginger ale in your honor.

It's sad but true: @jcmeloni has led me down the primrose path. I am now an adulterator.

I live to please.

Replying to @sleonchnm and @jcmeloni

It is so, I fear.

Sadly, remembering why I dropped my pre-streaming Netflix subscription: first disc into renewed membership is unwatchably damaged.

Have requested replacement. If I have another damaged disc this month, will back off to streaming-only.

Hmph.

Okay, two tasks accomplished this morning! Alas, one of them wasn't actually on the to do list.

Replying to @mlaconvention and @triproftri

I've offered feedback already, but a second reader might be good, too! #mla12

Replying to @mlaconvention and @triproftri

Nope, I meant on finished proposal. I'm all over it. #mla12

We draw a somewhat arcane distinction between cross-listing $$which involves a course \# in each dept$$ and cross-referencing [+]

$$in which the home dept course \# is listed under the other dept as well$$, but the latter is quite easy. The former, not so much.

The course reg system is a big reason for the distinction we draw; separate course # = big headache.

So mostly technical, but partly philosophical: the course remains an ENGL course, but counts toward MS, for instance.

Very few courses really require true cross-listing, that way.

Yes, and it will appear in the semester's course bulletin under both ENGL and MS, though only with an ENGL course number.

Let me know if you need more detail at any point!

RT @dougreside: Off the Tracks: Bill of Rights for Collaborators http://mith.umd.edu/offthetracks/recommendations/ //#trx4hx folks, you rock.

Congratulations! That's a great turn of events, however surreal!

Ooh, nice!

I think the time has come to acknowledge that I'm no longer accomplishing anything, and collapse on the sofa with a novel.

Well shoot. Was just settling in for a nice night of reading, but I seem to be having a migraine aura. This does not bode well for my night.

Thanks! What are your heading-off strategies? My drugs are specifically do-not-take-before-onset.

$$of actual headache; not aura$$

That said, they work.

First sign of a migraine: visual disturbances. In my case, a burned-in spot like from a flash, except it grows & develops technicolor cilia.

Second sign of an incipient migraine: disordered thinking. Like why am I still on the twitters when I know what's coming?

And every siren in NYC needs to roll down my street NOW.

I think this one may have turned out to be an ocular migraine; I've never had one of those before!

I think all is well this morning, though it's hard to say. Slept 9.5 hours. Was aware of having a headache during the night, but [+]

it felt like just an all-on-one-side headache, not my usual railroad spike. Feel a bit of a migraine hangover this morning, though. [-]

That 7yo sounds like a troublemaker.

Slept 9.5 hours last night, and 2 more this afternoon, and yet I'm wondering how soon I can go back to bed.

My eyes seem to be behaving better now, but the left half of my skull still doesn't seem like it fits properly.

I'm hoping so. I'll probably give in in half an hour or so. 9pm seems respectable.

Thanks! It's not my favorite, I'll say.

Thanks. Sleep certainly saved me last night!

What I ought to be doing: building slides for a talk on Tuesday. What I want to be doing: collapsing on the sofa with a novel.

Yes, quite! Thanks for asking.

Better, thanks!

I take it that's a vote in favor of collapse?

I feel the need to congratulate myself for finishing the bunch of bananas I bought this week before they turned.

$$Of course doing so required eating three of them today\.$$

The big one or the little one? I saw a little one in action at #mla11, and was TOTALLY JEALOUS.

I will hope you have it by the time I visit so that I can experience that envy again! $$My 1G MBAir is due for replacement soon\.$$

I'm excited, too! Very much looking forward to seeing you and KU.

Congrats, Siva!

Boy, they're awfully confident about on-time mail delivery, huh? A week's cushion would make me nervous esp this time of year.

Slides built for 4.5 pages of 11 page talk, to be given tomorrow at noon. This is taking way longer than I'd like.

Just got a big handful of Christmas cards. Ah, the joys of having your mail forwarded.

It's less slackerdom than it is just not wanting to deal with today. Blankets over head, it's not happening, la la la.

wp-includes/kses.php does some heavy-duty stripping. I've had to edit it to get @clioweb's tooltip footnote script to work.

I thought I heard thunder.

I've seen a LOT of snow today. And I even heard it. And I heard the thunder. But I did not see the #thundersnow. Sad.

If #thundersnow fell in the city but no one was outside to see it, would it make a noise?

It's gone eerily silent over here, which I can only take to mean it must be coming down hard right now.

NYU just closed for the day. The up side is that meeting is now cancelled. The down side is another week-long process of finding a time.

Yeah, no kidding. I think the closure was driven by transit shutdowns more than anything.

@ernestopriego Yay, congrats!

Indeed. Honestly, in the five years I was in grad school here, I don't remember a single snow day.

Wow. Somebody just turned on the Pomona email spigot. $$I was apparently being migrated overnight\. Migration complete\!$$

Today's view. Would have been more dramatic a few hours ago, of course. http://yfrog.com/h4buqlxj

Will be exciting walking under those trees for a while.

Thank you, EWR, for reopening as expected. R's flight in is on track to be 10 minutes early!

After a couple of trying days, this has been a good one. And R's plane actually did land at EWR 10 minutes early! Thanks, snow day.

Remember when I was all excited about R's plane landing 10 minutes early? Well, he's been sitting on the tarmac for an hour and 10 minutes.

Come on, EWR: plow out the gates, not just the runways!

Gah! CO106, on the ground at EWR for an hour and 40 mins: still 100 feet from the gate.

After 2 hours trapped on the tarmac, CO106 is finally at the gate and deplaning. Not cool, EWR.

Hi, class!

Go, Dave!

Dear winter: I have to travel Wednesday. On an ERJ. Please knock it off already. Love, kfitz.

Yay indeed! I shall face down the wintry mix with sheer force of excitement.

Cold I can deal with! I'm mostly worried about the LGA end of things; next storm hits here Tues/Weds. :(

Crossing my fingers that it will be wimpy by the time it gets here, and cleared out by noon Weds.

Nice! Mine would want their paws on the paper I'm working on, though.

Replying to @mmwwah and @mlaconvention

Mmmm... mouse.

Fabulous news, Dave. Sorry the sub-3:15 didn't happen, but a 5min PR at that pace is amazing!

It is a VERY useful term.

Yeah, often in a kind of friendly way. Frequently preceded by "complete."

Yes, definitely.

One keeps hoping against hope that the existing curbside snowbanks will disappear before the next onslaught. Winter's response: fat chance.

Whoa, indeed!

If you guys wouldn't mind passing it on sooner rather than later, it would be awesome. I'm flying from here to there Weds am. Thx!

Continental website says my Weds afternoon LGA > CLE flight is cancelled. Agent on phone says only CLE > LGA is cancelled. Hmm.
