I am having something of an impromptu snow day due to cancelled travel, but it's raining and the high today is going to be 40. This is odd.

I obviously haven't gotten near a sidewalk & can't see them from here. Good to know that my stay-inside plan is correct!

Yes, it's going to be nasty. I guess I'm not having a snow day but a slush day, which is all for the best.

It's what I always wanted in grad school: keep it in the 20s, haul as much snow away as possible, and then two good days in the 60s.

Okay, hacky folk: If one were thinking about beginning the process of migrating from MacOS to Linux, which flavor would you choose?

If you're curious, it's this that's put me over the edge. Long-time Apple fangirl, now thinking of walking away. http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/02/apple-responds-to-app-store-furor-says-it-wants-a-cut-of-e-book-sales.ars

That was what I was thinking, but wanted to be sure.

Indeed.

It's either insanely stupid or part of some larger strategy that I can't yet figure out. Either way, as you say, sub-optimal.

I'll look into that; stuck in my contract for a while, though.

Assuming my rescheduled flight takes off tomorrow morning, yes! $$And I'll gripe on Twitter if things go otherwise\.$$

The point is not the hardware; I'm outfitted. It's the OS.

I'm contemplating. I need to look at options more carefully before leaping, but am seriously considering the jump.

To android, esp if I wind up moving life to Linux more generally. This will all take time to sort out, though.

Will do!

Hmm. MBAir is coming up on 3yrs; iMc is a year-plus. Does that qualify as oldish?

I do see that complexity. But 30% is unreasonable as a tax on that resource use.

Thanks. And ugh. It's kinda what I'm afraid of.

The issue for me is whether iOS devices are open or closed platforms. This decision makes that more clear than I'd like. [+]

Except that if the only apps you can run must come from the App Store, the device is effectively closed.

Agreed on ePub. Happily, there are ways of forcibly opening those formats. Not that I would know anything about them.

There are plugins and droplets that can handle it.

Okay, Ubuntu geniuses: have downloaded & burned installation CD. When I try to boot from it, I get a flash of the ISOLINUX version info, [+]

a funky little graphic at the bottom of the screen, and then black screen & blinking cursor. Drive spins down. Nothing happens. Um, help?

I'm hoping to set the Mac up to dual boot, but it's Mac-only right now. Tried the USB approach & couldnt even get this far.

Nope! Don't get a menu at all, just the text line w/ version number, odd little graphic $$keyboard \= little person?$$ and then blink

Yay! Though feeling like Team Noob right now.

I'm 98% sure it was the liveCD version; will reboot in Mac & check.

No, starting with the iMac, as I couldn't get the bootable USB to work.

yes, it was definitely the desktop edition.

It's a 9,1. $$Circa early 2009, I think$$

Yeah, those are the instructions I'm working off of. Got the right iso file, did a checksum, burned to DVD as slowly as possible.

Yup! *sigh*

Yeah. Puzzled. Found some folks in forums having trouble booting from CD, but I tried their workarounds & got nada.

DVD. Can't get the iMac to recognize the bootable USB at all.

Will show you what I've got; it's not much.

@sheepeeh Whoa. This reboot actually brought up the language/boot menus! Now blinking cursor. But I'll wait a little longer...

Yup, that's how I did it.

Starting over clean. Probably more than I should have gotten myself into tonight, but what the heck.

Ha! Um, wait. Yikes!

No dice. It's all blinking cursor, all the time. At least I've gotten a nice hard disk reformat out of the deal.

Here's the weird little graphic I get right before I get the blinking cursor of doom. What's it trying to tell me? http://yfrog.com/gzo1hrj

Possible, yes. I'll test that out in the next go-round. Thanks!

Oh, you. $$Actually it would be saying "dude, I'm a Mac\. What are you trying to do?"$$

For those who were playing along at home, the problem with booting via the Ubuntu LiveCD was apparently about my NVidia graphics card.

I downloaded the alternate installer, which booted right up and is happily installing away. But now I need info on the drivers I need, etc.
