Congrats, Molly! $$BTW, are you still going to be at @HUMLab next week when I'm visiting?$$

Fantastic! I'll look forward to seeing you then, too. I'm very excited about the visit.

RT @mkgold: Debates in the Digital Humanities - available in early January & at #mla12. http://bit.ly/rTidmk http://amzn.to/sz1obE #dhdebates

Congratulations on the gorgeous volume; I can't wait to see it in person! #dhdebates

Congratulations!

I am, absolutely! The essay has been revised & submitted for publication, but I'd love more discussion toward future work.

My first thought was "One can only hope!"

I wondered what that noise was! :)

Seriously, I wish I could have made it to #hastac11, but other travel/work commitments made it impossible.

Aw, thanks! I'll look forward to catching up at #mla12!

@shanakimball @BGCDML @sivavaid Thanks, you guys! I hope you're having a fantastic time at #hastac2011

Congrats, Steve. Looks delish!

Doing laundry, cleaning house, packing, and trying to keep at least half an eye on #hastac2011 $$where I am increasingly sorry not to be$$.

Today's itinerary, however? EWR > CPH > ARN > UME, where I'll be spending a few days with @HUMLab. http://admin.humlab.umu.se/node/1821

MT @jmittell: Folks interested in peer review & open access: read Martin Barker's intro to new issue of Participations http://bit.ly/vawjBv

Could be great!

So I hear! Thanks a bunch - sounds like it was a fantastic talk. #hastac2011

On my way to EWR, and suddenly missing @gowalla. Not what it became, or what it seems to be turning into, but what it was like a year ago.

Really! I miss being told where you were at random moments of the day. I miss going somewhere and never knowing what I'd find!

I kept hoping they'd go back to the things I loved about it. No dice, I guess. :(

Fun.

I am *this* far away from finishing vol 3. Have been reading FOR EVER. Must. finish. soon.

I think I started vol 1 in August. It's been very slow going. Hoping to make some progress on this trip!

I think I miss that llama most of all.

Okay, on the plane. Waaaaaaaay in the back, and pretty intimate with my neighbor. But the seat is fairly comfy and I'm hoping I can sleep.

CPH, where my Boingo account works. Even if my brain doesn't. On to Stockholm, and thence to Umea.

Have achieved Stockholm. Am more or less delirious, but have obtained currency I'm pretty sure is correct. And espresso.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to it, too.

Actually, I'll be there in a few hours. Waffles, sauna, and beer sounds awfully nice!

Thanks! I might have known I'd find you on the twitters at this hour.

I will not fall asleep. I will not fall asleep. I will not fall asleep.

So far, so good!

Well, rats. Slept brilliantly for four hours, but am wide awake now.

It's quite lovely so far. I'm just hoping to be awake during the proper part of the day… um, today.

That is a nice thing! I managed to crash for a second 4-hour stint, so I think I should be in fairly decent shape.

Okay, another 4-hour bout of sleep and I'm feeling way more human. Now to make myself look human so I can get some COFFEE.

I send you good sleeping vibes.

Thank you! I'm still at the hotel, but will be on campus a bit later this morning, and then for much of the afternoon.

Ooh, I definitely hear you on the jet lag!

I love the post now as much as I did then, though it's up to *departments* to change the practice, not the org.

Wait, how did we get to interviewing at the convention not being ethical? $$And I'm probably way too jet lagged for this now\.$$

I'm not denying the MLA has a role to play. But it isn't the MLA that is interviewing at the convention, as your tweet said.

The org does NOT fund itself off the conf. We lose money on it every year.

And yes, there are serious \$ considerations in conf interviewing - something we try to ameliorate via travel grants for grads.

It's not perfect - and there's a long way to go to improve - but we're working on it!

No, I don't think there's anything about censure in those guidelines.

Remembering again how strangely dislocated I feel on European time. Woke up to a bunch of overnight Twitter convos it's too late to add to.

I'm having a fabulous time, thanks! I think the Twitter dislocation would be less acute if I weren't so jet lagged.

Yeah, okay, that was a pretty obnoxious thing to whine about.

It's the "semi" part that makes weighing in late odd. The convo has moved on; responding late feels a bit awkward.

Oh, in that case! Northern Sweden is awesome, if really really dark this time of year. Makes for good sleep, though.

Thank you so much for coming! It was a great conversation; I'll look forward to talking more. #HUMlab

Really engaged audience for this afternoon's talk at #HUMlab, followed by great seminar. Thanks so much to @patriksv for the invitation!

Now hoping my brain doesn't turn into jello before dinner. #jetlag

Actually, speaking as someone from Louisiana, it's a reasonable mistake. New Orleans is only marginally in the US at all.

Hey, I didn't know that, either! I grew up $$& went to college in$$ BR.

My stepsister & brother in law went to Tech! No ULL connex, but lots of Lafayette friends.

Oh, sad! I mean, good that she's in Texas, but :( on the food.

Ah, jet lag. Thought I was doing well, as I managed to go to sleep at 10.30pm. Woke up at 3.30am. Wide. Awake.

Wow, I just two days ago ran across something that made me say, wow, Harry Morgan is still alive! Bummer.

Congrats, @mkirschenbaum, on such and awesome placement for Track Changes! Now get cracking; I want to read it.

Thanks so much to @patriksv and the rest of the folks at #HUMlab for a fantastic visit to Umeå!

Tomorrow, up several hours before the crack of dawn to begin the trip home. Of course, that's not hard; dawn cracks pretty late hereabouts.

The pleasure was mine, I assure you. Thanks so much for all your questions yesterday; it was a great discussion!

I saw that in your face when I described Guillory's argument! I still read them that way too $$so I read fewer than I should$$.

It was great meeting you; I'll look forward to hearing more about how your work develops. Thanks for everything!

About to head to the airport to begin the trip back to NYC. It's been fantastic, Umeå; let's do it again sometime!

Thanks, Brian. It's pretty fantastic here; I think you'll really like it when you get here someday. Which I'm sure you will!

From the taxi to the first plane to the second plane to the air train to the light rail train. Next, to the subway, and then to the street.

When did they start pronouncing it SEE-caucus, and for goodness sake why?

Srsly. Pretty amazing trip, all the way around.

OH in the passport control line today, Mom to sleepy 7 year old: "It's probably a good thing we didn't sleep much on the plane." +

Sleepy 7 year old to Mom: "Why is it a good thing?!? People need sleep to survive!"

There is something a little Knight Rider-looking about it.

I can't take any credit; the editors of the special section requested that it be made available OA, and the MLA was happy to do so!

Hey, congrats! Now get back to work.

WAIT. You mean to say that we might actually be in the same room? $$My attendance is likewise only prolly, but prolly\!$$

Actually, I'm pretty sure I owe you one!

Wish I were preparing with you!

Phew! Glad to hear you're better!

Climbed into bed to read at 8.45 last night. Dragged myself back out at 7.30 this morning. Not much reading took place inbetween.

Mostly #sleepwinning, though my fitbit tells me I wasn't terrifically efficient at it.

Then again, I guess if you can keep at it long enough, efficiency ceases to matter.

Ew.

Love it! It feeds my inner data junkie, but has also helped me see the patterns of my activity & sleep, which I find useful.

After all that sleep last night, I am totally failing at sleep tonight. Good thing I don't have a lot to do tomorrow. #oops

Sigh. Thanks for the coffee, but sorry to hear you're in the same boat. There was SUCH a good night & then there was NOT a good night.

I'd be completely down with that.

Posers, all of them.

Very sorry not to be at #cni11f right now, but given Very Big Meeting starting here on Wednesday, there was no way I could make it. +

So thanks for the #cni11f tweets, @dancohen and @TAC_NISO!

Dude, I had a package come from a retailer a couple of weeks ago in a used, crushed box $$formerly UPS envelopes$$ with one +

deflated air pack and a bottle of liquid laundry detergent that had ruptured & leaked all over everything else.

Cannot get to the #SCMS program with any of the links that have been posted. Have the removed it to untrack changes?

Thanks!

Reaction 1: Saturday, 5pm. Really?!?

Reaction 2: 22 simultaneous sessions?

Reaction 3: Well, at least it's not Sunday.

It's back now: http://cmstudies.site-ym.com/resource/resmgr/docs/2012_preliminary_program_dra.pdf

Ah, the high drama of copyediting. I know it well.

Oh, sadness! There goes my hopes of having a cocktail with you afterward. I guess that will have to wait until May.

New post: Adventures in Publishing Contracts. $$Your input desired\!$$ http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/adventures-in-publishing-contracts/

Thanks! I'll reply there; leverage is good, but it's a delicate spot; I think it's important for the piece to be in the vol, so...

I think you're right. SIGH.

Yes, absolutely! I'd have gone to the barricades for the Planned Obsolescence contract; happily, it wasn't necessary.

Any WP3.3 update stories out there?

Sounds good; thanks!

That sounds like a problem!

Replying to @nowviskie, @scholarslab and @praxisprogram

Fabulous news -- congrats!

Replying to @GeorgeOnline, @jbj and @samplereality

I'm contemplating it. :) #mla12

Thanks so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Warning: shameless self-promotion ahead! // RT @jwluther: Just finished Planned Obsolescence by @kfitz. Bam! What a great read.

Thanks!

If you have ideas about how to do this, let me know; the implosion of TwapperKeeper has me baffled. #mla12

Right now, I've got an RSS feed for it, from which I can probably export, but how far back is a q. #mla12

My understanding was that the self-hosted TK wasn't working anymore…?

Fabulous. Keep me posted and let me know if I can be of any help!

Replying to @GWCChuck, @georgeonline and @samplereality

Good thought. I've got ThinkUp running, so could go that route...

Ah, well. It was a lovely thought. I eagerly await your newest scheme. @gwcchuck @georgeonline

Having a fantastic discussion today with the MLA Publications Committee on the future of scholarly communication in the organization!

RT @thecriticallede: Check out our interview with @kfitz about the state of the scholarly book and the future of publishing in the acade ...

Psst, iOS and Android users. There's something useful at mla12.org! #mla12

Pretty snazzy, eh?

As a non-developer, I could not say, but will pass the q in the right direction!

Haven't you heard the web is dead? $$Or is it apps that are dead? I keep forgetting\.$$

Thanks! We're pretty excited about it.

Does it involve Elvis?

I see your 8 hours and raise you 2 days.

Oh, no! I'm at the END of 2 days; I'm done soon. $$Right? Soon?$$ Good luck with your own day 2!

I will confess to being mildly curious about the selection, but hey, I can totally belt it out if called upon. #dhoke http://dhoke.herokuapp.com

4.45am. LGA. Security line stretched almost out the door. Happy holidays!

Super sorry to be missing many amazing things in NYC today. Among them @mkirschenbaum's NYPL talk. Ah, well; filial duty calls.

Now that's an awesome Christmas present!

BTR > IAH > LGA. Beginning the long trip home.

Lovely weekend but way too short!

Ooh, smart.

Congratulations! Fabulous news, Miriam.

Here's how the month of December has gone for me thus far: 1.5 days in the office; family funeral; travel to Sweden; full-day meeting. +

2 days in the office, 2 full-day meeting, travel to Baton Rouge, 2 full-day meeting. And that brings us up to today. +

In 21 days, I've had 3.5 to get stuff done. And I wonder why I'm the teeniest bit stressed out.

Congrats to you and Brandeis! I look forward to hearing more great stuff soon.

HUGE thanks to my friends at @digitalcampus $$and especially @foundhistory$$ for the very kind words in the 2011 Campies! http://digitalcampus.tv/2011/12/21/episode-79-the-2011-campies/

I have upgraded 1 of 3 sites, with no trouble. Will tackle others soon!

Is the North Pole not a signatory to the Geneva Convention?

Now wondering who will take his place as what the French call the North Pole's "homme fort."

Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful$$ly Warm, for This Time of Year$$: http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/oh-the-weather-outside-is-frightfully-warm-for-this-time-of-year/

December 22. Irish whiskey on the terrace of awesomeness. Unseasonable, but I'll take it.

Not exactly, no. Especially not after last year.

Me too! Sometime soon, though.

Ah, productivity: I am spending part of this morning restoring my ayphone, which my computer suddenly fails to recognize. #grrrr

Or rather, it recognizes it but thinks it syncs with another computer, and so wants to delete everything & make me manually restore. #grrrr

I've actually all but stopped running, so I'm not a good person to ask, alas. Runner's World used to do good reviews, though.

Head cleared, house organized, writing clarified. Holidays begun! Here's hoping yours are just as swell.

Well, I have successfully restored my ayphone and have even added some fun things. Not exactly faster or stronger, but definitely better.

Just marveling that you were in THIRD grade in 1992, while that was the SECOND presidential election I voted in. #sigh

Maggie Smith just caused me to do a spit-take. Literally.

I do, too! It's actually a season 2 moment $$shhh\!$$.

Downton Abbey, but I like to think it would be exactly the same.

Ah, that was a good one too! No, this is a moment... um... to come.

In which case. it was "I wouldn't say I was *planning* it." :)

I have a big pile of writing to do, & I promised myself I'd get a bunch of it done this weekend and next. But I really want to read a novel.

That's the permission I was seeking. Thank you both!

Oh, this is no time of year for invidious value judgments.

$$Which is to say that I'm still trying to finish the George R\. R\. Martin silliness so I can move on already\.$$

There are days when I'm really happy the aypad doesn't display what I'm reading on the cover.

Seriously. And yet I can't stop. Even though I know my desire for closure will be frustrated.

One day, as god is my witness, I will make a roux that is dark enough. #stupidpalegumboagain

That dark roux is going to require three things I lack: a good cast-iron skillet; peanut oil; sufficient cojones.

Exactly. The "don't turn your back for a second" factor makes me way too cautious.

The good news is that the gumbo is going to rock anyhow, even if it is a little timid.

The dangers of digital publishing models!

Thank you, Sarah!

This has been a thoroughly lovely long holiday weekend. But must get back to work; pls send a week's worth of good prolific writing vibes.

$$Bum shoulder ceasing to hurt so I can concentrate vibes would also be much appreciated\.$$

Thanks! And right backatcha, for whatever you need 'em for!

I will reflect them back your way, doubled!

Ooh, thank you. I hope that your holidays are treating you well!

Thanks; I could definitely use them. $$I imagine vibes coming from there are powerful indeed\!$$

Introspection alert: The Year in Review, at Planned Obsolescence. http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/the-year-in-review/

Fantastic! I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. #mla12

I mean this utterly without sarcasm: I'm very happy to be at work today. Easy commute, quiet office, and a plan to get some writing done.

Ooh, good for you. I, however, refuse to allow thoughts of yoga and massages detract from my present in-office happiness.

Hey, you too, wherever you are!

Good for you! Sharing all the fabulous productivity vibes that got sent my way yesterday...

Oh, no. Take care, Mark.

Yes, the title is a dorky Greenblatt joke. No, I do not think of myself as Queen. $$Yet\.$$ New at Planned Obsolescence: http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/the-public-scholars-two-bodies/

I've had such a great day working that I forgot to stop and go get lunch. Whoops. #notmakingitup

Ooh, sorry! I will send job vibes you way, stat.

Not at all! I'm extremely lucky, and it's good to be reminded of that.

Oh, it's an appropriation wrapped in a remix, wrapped in bacon.

Sitting in a bar wondering why it suddenly feels like 1981 in here. Takes a second to sink in: Rush. Tom Sawyer. Dude.

Entirely possible!

And it has taken this long for the second penny to drop: THAT WAS THIRTY YEARS AGO. #officiallyold

Aw man.

I'm so sorry - my best thoughts to you, your wife, and the rest of your family.

Glad you've caught up with us! Where've you been? #mla12

A little over two weeks ago! Sorry you've been sick, but I hope not for that long...

That would do it. One needs free forearms in order to manipulate the mobile app.

Aha. Yes, there's that, too.

Lies, Damned Lies $$on Planned Obsolescence$$ http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/lies-damned-lies/

Ooh, excellent. Will do!

Wow. I am so curious what that means in the 5yo's context.

I have that dream all the time. Sometimes the elevators move in spirals or become streetcars. I never get where I was going.

My variant last night was trying to negotiate a university campus in a European country in order to get to a doctor's appt. +

Bureaucracy, technology, translation - an awful mix.

A bunch of annoying problems have me sorely tempted to wipe my hard disk and do a clean reinstall. Maybe it's just New Year's Eve talking.

Either that or I'm dragging my heels on writing my last #mla12 presentation...
