This is a bit too complex for 140, I think. I’m going to ponder and post something longer...

RT @MLAnews: MLA Commons to Launch at #mla13 in Boston! http://www.mla.org/news_from_mla/news_topic&topic=671

Hey, excellent. I’m only at ARL briefly, but I’ll be at DLF for the duration. I’ll look forward to seeing you!

I’ll retweet this tomorrow for the morning crowd, but in the meantime: come work with me! http://www.mediabistro.com/joblistings/jobview.asp?joid=140583&page=1 or https://secure.interfolio.com/apply/16924

Replying to @finnarne, @patriksv and @UmeaUniversity

I’m sorry I missed this before -- congratulations, Patrik!

Hey, everybody who has posted great things about our awesome community facilitator job at the #MLA: apply, apply, apply!

Had a fabulous time last night in @mkgold’s #dhdebates12 class! Thanks for the hospitality, all.

Okay, srsly? Where in this post do I suggest that I want to “control what people write on the internet”? http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/advice-on-academic-blogging-tweeting-whatever/

This dude: http://scientopia.org/blogs/proflikesubstance/2012/10/02/english-profs-want-to-control-the-internet/

Mwah-ha-ha.

Why, thank you!

Looking for an energetic, engaging community facilitator for the #MLA. Come work with me! http://www.mediabistro.com/joblistings/jobview.asp?joid=140583&page=1 or https://secure.interfolio.com/apply/16924

Heading to Vancouver tmw to speak at UBC on Thursday. Then on to UVic on Friday. If you’re in the area come say hi! http://blogs.ubc.ca/bcrlglectures/2012/09/17/planned-obsolescence-publishing-technology-and-the-future-of-the-academy/

The good news about the crazy long immigration line I've been in for the last half hour is that the free wifi has let me catch up on email.

The bad news is that I still have three lengths to go.

I think this crowd could bust out in a solid "Thriller" any time.

I swear I'm not exaggerating: THOUSANDS of people in the non-CA residents line. ONE agent. ONE.

This wont be that bad, but in definitely looking at a solid 1.5hrs.

Hey! A second agent!

Woo-hoo!

Ooh, excellent. I'm on my own for the rest of the day today, so ill check it out!

I know! Not only was everyone using mobile devices in an unmolested fashion, but there was free wifi. Made it bearable.

I’m even in the hotel. But for real, it was literally 1.5 hours in that line. Craziness.

That, I cannot say. Our flight was an hour late and got in after $$instead of before$$ two huge flights from Asia. So I dunno.

Weather is crazy beautiful. Apparently something of a drought right now; 8mm rain since August, instead of the usual 200+.

Apparently I am having notability issues $$snif$$. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Fitzpatrick_$$academic$$

Well, no wonder then.

I suppose there is such a thing as too much notability.

Yeah, it’s at least 3 years out of date -- pre-promotion, apparently even before my move wholly into media studies.

I apparently rely on primary sources. I’m quite sure there’s a pharmaceutical in development for that, though.

I’m afraid I’m in Vancouver/Victoria thru Saturday. Can we chat later in the weekend, or early next week?

Sounds great. Let me know what works for you.

Very much looking forward to participating in this joint MLA/LSA session on open access! http://idiom.ucsd.edu/~ebakovic/LSA-OA/ #mla13

Eduroam! I have been so jealous so often of folks from Eduroam institutions!

Yay! I didn’t know you were going to be there!

This sounds just like my life, except that the thing due on the 15th isn’t done either.

Backblaze for cloud backups, plus Carbon Copy Cloner for local bootable backups. Plus Dropbox. Lots of copies, you know.

Nearing the end of a fabulous trip to UBC and UVic. Thanks to everybody here for their hospitality!

I bought myself a little present in Victoria today.

I couldn’t help myself!

It reminds me of the researcher’s headgear from Vannevar Bush’s “As We May Think.”

No, the BC Libraries group brought me in; I gave a talk Thursday at UBC and Friday at UVic. So sorry to have missed you, too!

Escalator out. Missed the train by 10 seconds. Next train is running 30 minutes late. SUPER HAPPY.

It's a nice night to sit on a deserted train platform. Especially knowing there's still a bus to take after the train.

Thank you; I could use it. This will have been a long day, should it ever manage to end.

The Newark Liberty Airport rail station. Really really happy I didn't spring for the cab right now.

Thanks for concern! The train should be here in 3 mins now & trying to get a cab here would be worse in wait & scariness.

Will do, definitely. Oh, also: I'm on a train!

Home.

Very happy that you guys did not have to bust out the helicopter, or the laser-equipped sharks.

I’m sorry I missed you, but I hope the visit was great! I’m sure we’ll cross paths in Boston.

Excellent!

I’d be far prouder of myself for finishing the big PITA task I just checked off my list if it hadn’t actually been due several weeks ago.

$$And I’ll just say, so much for a day off\. Yes, I am feeling aggrieved\. Why do you ask?$$

Eh, had a bunch of errands to go run. Am celebrating the last fifteen minutes of this day "off," tho, on my slightly chilly terrace.

Also? Ew.

I have spent much of the evening being slobbered on by one of my cats. It's a good thing he's pretty.

He's a good cat except for the drool. And the predictable plot twists.

Thanks! It was great getting to talk with you; thanks for making the drive down!

it's a relatively recent thing, and it's totally love slobber. I love that cat, but sheesh.

2 hrs late, but heck yeah I'm there. Done with my session at 5.30 & 2 blocks away.

Sorry it took me so long to get your comment out of moderation! It’s live now -- and thanks!

Yeah, I resemble that remark. I hope all’s well on your end of the world!

Wow, I can’t imagine what that must feel like. $$Kidding\!$$

Oh, Amtrak wifi, why must you so taunt me with the illusion of connectivity?

It's a gorgeous day in DC - a good one for a little conversation about scholarly communication $$and then a meetup with some local pals$$!

Will join the call as soon as I get to my hotel!

Burritos are the pizza of the 21st century. $$Which is to say, ubiquitous, and way harder to do right than people think\.$$

A very peaceful domination, yes. You’ll love it.

Crud. Teeny tiny little migraine aura. So completely not okay with an overnight migraine, even if its a teeny tiny one.

Thanks for the good wishes last night, all. The headache never materialized, happily enough, but the hangover this morning did.

I’ve never had a purely ocular migraine before; my visual disturbances have always been followed by the headache. So this is weird.

I’m particularly surprised at how rattled I feel this morning despite the absence of the headache. Very weird.

Thank you! I find myself sitting here wondering if my computer screen has always been this glaringly bright...

Indeed.

Oh god I just got an email in which “webinar” is used as a verb. THIS IS NOT HELPING MY HEAD.

I kid you not. “If you would like to webinar in…” LEFT SIDE OF BRAIN EXPLODES.

I knew what you meant -- and thanks!

They’re very freaky, not least because I associate that visual disturbance with the pounding to come.

Yeah, I’ll take it, definitely.

Bizarre, yeah? I still feel today as though I had the headache, even though I didn’t.

After 9 hours of sleep, I'm finally feeling a bit more human. Here's hoping it lasts!

Oh, the satisfaction of *both* being able to check two items off the to-do-list *and* get three messages out of the inbox in one fell swoop.

Every once in a while it works!

Yes.

Precisely. I'm sorry for the aggravation, but happy for the lack of aggravation!

Getting my inboxes & to-do lists under control no longer produces relief but instead the mildly panicky sense that I’m forgetting something.

Just leaving the ITHAKA Sustainable Scholarship meeting. Right next door, same hotel space, a big Romney fundraiser. It's... I'm...

And it's pouring and I am umbrellaless. Maybe I won't leave after all.

Have \$5 street umbrella, will get the heck away from the crazy rich people.

They were! That was the creepiest lobby scene I’ve ever seen. Hundreds of identical androids waiting for coat check.

So far, so good! I’m up in the morning; hopefully the crazy will have moved on.

Rats rats rats. Finished tomorrow’s talk this morning and was very happy with it. Just read through it: 7 mins, or 25%, too short.

Okay, folks. I’ve got an article to write that MUST be done by the end of the day tomorrow. Anybody up for some work sprints this weekend?

Heh. That’s a little more multitasking than I can really handle.

I was just reading that! My November is NUTS, but I might just try to work it in. But first, this article, this weekend...

Okay. Have set up Concentrate. Am a few minutes behind the half-hour, but am starting… now. See you back here in 30.

Sprint 1 went well, but coming back turned into a software update process. Anyhow, next sprint starting imminently.

Fab. Let me know how you’re doing.

And I’m off. #worksprint

Okay, #worksprint 2, done. Article is progressing! If you’re working today, how’s it going?

My next #worksprint is going to involve focused research rather than network-disabled writing. Last one uncovered need for information!

First, however, must make lunch. Then onward!

*high five*

If you happen to have a new revenue model for scholarly societies handy, that would be awesome.

Wow, that’s nice.

My theme’s nicely responsive, but I’m tempted by this one anyhow.

It’s a modification of Ari: http://www.elmastudio.de/wordpress-themes/ari/

The coffee at Think? Or the venue as a space for writing?

By the by, I’m about to start a research sprint, and then after a break, back into writing. I hope you’re doing well!

I find most of the coffee places around NYU impossible venues. But there’s definitely better coffee out there.

Excellent!

Okay, after a nice lunch and some goofing around, I’m going back in. 30-minute research sprint starts now.

Exactly.

Exactly. The only place I’ve had luck with is VBar, and then only if I show up early.

My pal @jcmeloni got me started on these: pick 1 task, turn off distractions, set a timer for 30 $$or 15$$ mins, and go! Then rest.

And repeat.

Excellent! I’m about 2/3 of the way done with this weekend’s writing. Hoping to wrap it up tonight!

I know, right? I’ve been using Concentrate, which forces me to focus by shutting off certain apps & sites.

Just a quick YAY to say that I have a draft of my article! I may press onward today; I’ve got another piece I could stand to get written.

Indeed. It’s so nice to feel things moving forward. And that’s not just the coffee speaking!

Thanks! I hope your travels have gone well so far...

Thanks to the cast-iron dutch oven my mom got me for my birthday, I’ve just succeeded in making the darkest roux I’ve ever made. #gumbotime

I’ll post what I’ve done this time; it’s usually a make-it-up-as-you-go affair for me.

I’m hoping. There is a tiny chance that I may have overdone the darkness of the roux. But hey - I could try again next Sunday!

Ha! I was indeed thinking of our writing date. But you’re right - I should actually focus on, I don’t know, writing maybe.

Okay, Mountain Lion: I have had it up to HERE with your popping up windows that steal focus while I’m in the middle of typing. KNOCK IT OFF.

I think you’re right. I misread that line as coming from a counsel in the Romney admin re their policing of changes.

But it now appears to me to be about the need for manual changes since the form itself wasn’t revised.
