I can bear many of iOS’s skeuomorphs $$the pageturns & bookshelves$$. But I despise the reel-to-reel player in Podcasts. http://nyti.ms/QVp6vc

It’s not the old-school thing I hate; it’s that it’s all form over function. It’s very hard to control with any precision.

I forgot the leather apps. Yes, those really irritate me.

You have no idea how much I look forward to getting on that plane to Denver. Looking forward to DLF, too, of course!

I migrated to my sister’s place on the UES Tues; have to reclimb the stairs today to check on cats, and again tmw/Sat to pack…

I keep telling myself that I need the exercise.

This is true of all buses. I walked down 2nd Ave from 74th to 45th; passed 3 select buses, none of which ever caught back up to me.

RT @MLAnews: the application deadline for travel grants to #MLA13 has been re-extended to *Friday, 9 November*, as we recover from #Sandy.

Ten-plus years of blogging at that URL and I still mis-type it the first time, every time.

I’d love to see it! And thanks for the kind words...

Just made the climb to the 16th floor. Cats are fine. Fridge now cleaned out. Door guys think we'll have power tomorrow. May they be right!

Thanks, Ernesto!

By Sat 11pm for all of Manhattan, they're saying, but I leave at noon, so I'm really going for tomorrow!

UGH. I'm so sorry! I'll hope it's sooner.

That's awful, and must be incredibly frustrating. I'm 3 blocks south of the line in Manhattan and it makes me crazy.

Thanks! I'm hopeful, but trying not to be over-optimistic.

Yeah, the literal reason is obvious. And I know the cash influx is important. But it’s shockingly tone-deaf, right now.

That’s true. If the city were to find ways to turn over more of the proceeds to relief this year...

That, I could get behind.

I will tackle the stairs again today to unpack for evacuation & repack for #dlfforum. Can’t wait to see you, no jokes.

Replying to @ernestopriego, @drcomics and @AtwoodTate

Thanks for that, Ernesto!

I made the big stair climb again. My door guys say power is slowly marching up the east side & that we shd be back on by midnight.

I can see traffic signals on 3rd Ave as far north as 20th or so. Please, please let the power keep marching this way...

RT @GOOD: Can't get to NYC for the Marathon but have a hotel room? Don't cancel your reservation: Donate it to Sandy refugees http://t.c ...

Still trying to decide whether to take a chance on power returning tonight & stay here. Upside: get to hang w kitties for night & wait on +

hauling suitcase down 16 flts. Feed cats in morning & leave fr airport from here. Downside: no certainty of power, water, heat. Also dinner.

Best gifts ever: LED camping lantern, rechargeable USB power pack, hand-crank LEF flashlight.

LES/EVillage, on! Chelsea, on! Come on, WSq, WVillage, Murray Hill!

So close. No cigar.

A festive neighbor across the street. How? And why?

You got it! Are you home?

Thank goodness for heat & good neighbors. I'll hope for more very soon.

No, so sorry - I meant "you got my 'come on, S Village' wishes." Didn't mean to get yr hopes up too soon.

Yup. I'm literally 3 blocks south of the line.

So, Denver: I will be partaking of yr electricity and running water, & also speaking at @CpPress $$aka Counterpath$$ tmw at 7pm. Come say hi!

RT @rgfeal: Pleased to have spent day @ACLS1919 with @tcallaghan44, @kfitz and other #MLA colleagues. Doing our best to keep MLA running!

If my fingers were any more crossed, they'd be fused. :)

Thanks! Recs would be most gratefully received. I could use a really good meal or two. :)

In case I haven't said: I have the best sister. Not only invited me to stay w her & her husband in their 1BR but insisted when I hesitated.

Holy crap. Madison Square! Lights up to 30th or so!

Lights 3 blocks to my north, 6 or so blocks to my south. SO CLOSE!

Sooooo close.

Power on at Madison Sq means I have viable 3G again, so things are already better.

Yeah, I'm sticking it out. Want to be here if the lights go on & hang with them while I can.

Park, sorta. I'm at 36th & 3rd.

Thanks! I'm super hopeful.

Thank you! I take it you & yours came through well?

Fell asleep a couple of hours ago. Just woke up to find that my power is on! #woohoo!

Weird. I have no idea what woke me up & less idea what made me check the power. According to @ConEdison, it had been on for 15 mins.

It's amazing. Sending power-ful thoughts your way...

In car on my way to EWR, headed to DEN for #dlfforum. Looking forward to seeing many of you there!

About to board for DEN and #dlfforum. I intend to do nothing but amuse myself on this flight. Nerves need soothing.

I don't know that I knew it ever was!

WOO HOO! Happy settling back in, Micki!

EWR seemed oddly peaceful today. It's true that it's less crowded than usual, but that wasn't it. The PA system is down. Changes everything.

Oh, ha! My DEN is the Denver airport. A bit different; definitely less educational.

Srsly! So sorry; sending you and yours all my power-on vibes.

Hi Denver! I am in a cab with a dying transmission. If I'm not at the Westin in a normal amount of time, I'll be on the side of the freeway.

I was trying not to scrutinize the metaphor too closely.

Looks like I'm going to get there, so yay. But seriously: powered stuff just needs to work for me for a while.

Yay Westin! #dlfforum

Much obliged.

The one tonight is my open access talk, at Counterpath Press. Very excited about it!

One tonight, at Counterpath Press, 7pm. DLF talk tomorrow morning.

Hey, #dlfforum: My OA talk at Counterpath won't get started until closer to 7.30 tonight, so you've still got time to come by: 613 22nd St.

Hi!

Very well! Small but engaged audience; great discussion after. Looking forward to tomorrow!

I was already nervous about today’s talk. I did not need to discover a huge packing FAIL. $$White blouse; black underthing\. Be kind, lights\.$$

Love it.

Nice.

Fortunately, I’m wearing a black blazer over the blouse, so I think I’m okay. Phew.

Very wise.

I have one line of a song I don't know stuck in my head.

:)

Me? Annoyed? Why would you think that?

Wardrobe solution achieved: jacket over blouse. Then sent back to change by videographer who didn't like black jacket against black bgrnd.

I'm covered, so to speak. But thanks!

Okay, bad attitude on the mend. Readying myself for an awesome talk. Yes? Yes.

Good morning, #dlfforum! Let's make this happen.

Thanks, Josh!

I like that. Buck up, Corinthians!

That rapid evolution will prob require us to develop new ways of interpreting the metrics diachronically. But even this wd improve +

on current models that measure citations/impact too soon for most humanities work; we’d be able to see impact develop over time.

Last I checked, this @kfitz isn’t anybody’s boy. :)

Thoroughly enjoying #dlfforum now that my talk is done. But would love a little less aircon. Being cold is putting me into hibernation mode!

Libraries seem to me to be in the crucial position in the institution to merge info gathering & dissemination. It’s a point of +

pivot between the institution and the world beyond. Library collab w/fac, press, schol societies is crucial to future of scholcomm.

ROCK ON.

Nice! Thanks for letting me know.

Really thrilled to have gotten to spend a couple of days listening to the conversation at #dlfforum. Thanks so much for including me!

YAY!

Me too! And very happy we finally got to cross non-virtual paths.

:)

I was a lot less nervous before I read that Harper's article.

Trust me, don't.

Tomorrow will be the first Election Day I can remember that I won't be heading to my polling place; I voted absentee a couple of weeks ago.

I'll be sad not to have my "I voted" sticker, but glad to be watching from a bit of a distance.

If only I could! I'm going to be flying from Denver to Eugene OR, a little out of the way from you.

Yes, pls.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting there tomorrow afternoon. So I'll at least have a partial day of gorgeous.

Thanks! I’ll hope I get the chance. Sorry not to see you, but another time.

Thursday evening. Headed to Oregon tomorrow.

Oh yes pls, on all counts! Do you have any availability this weekend?

Thanks!

Either way; I’m completely open. Would love to see you - as a work day or just for evening fun.

Will do.

Where were you when the election was called? I was in the bathroom, thanks.

I left Sunday morning. Traveling back tomorrow, at least in theory. I hope things will have cleared up by then!

Indeed! I hope all is well with you two. Will be in touch when I get back!

I just want to say: I’m happy to have missed this week’s storm, after last week’s. But… +

after having been totally ROBBED with a snowless winter last year, I’m strangely bummed to be missing the snow today. +

Weird, I know.

Good grief, I love Rachel Maddow.

Just amazing.

Oh, I would love the slop to be gone by the time I get home tonight. It's the actual act of snowing that I have missed.

Home! To power and water, and hungry, complaining cats, and what promises to be a gorgeous weekend. $$And a productive one, I hope\!$$

Looking good, lower Manhattan.

New post: Warming Up. http://wp.me/p2w8Sh-Cx

Despite the fact that the temps will be in the 60s this weekend, it is verifiably winter. How do I know? +

We have entered the season when the world attempts to electrocute me, one small shock at a time.

That sounds like how my whole day went.

What she said.

That @ouryoungster is a seriously cute kid.

Woo-hoo! Congrats, @lmrhody!

Only if you get a badge for Friendliness for having done so.

Dear insomnia: you can either keep me awake at night thinking about what I have to do, or wake me up at 4 thinking about what I have to do.

Both is just mean.

If I get a choice, I'll take the latter, too. Having both utterly precludes productivity, I fear.

Outward and Visible Signs http://wp.me/p2w8Sh-Cz

Thanks, WP, for that ever-so-informative tweet. That’s a new blog post, sheesh: Outward and Visible Signs. http://wp.me/p2w8Sh-Cz

I would LOVE to know how you managed to stop. Recognizing it is the first step, but the next step feels HUGE.

Ooh, I can see that. I would love to read any musings you’re willing to share!

That. Is. Awesome.

It's 4am. I'm awake again, not from insomnia but to get myself together and head to #2012ASA! See some of you there.

Dude. So far, this day rocks. Woke up just before the alarm. Had time for coffee. Somehow qualified for TSA Pre-check!

So: no shoe removal, no pulling out the technology. Just bags through the scanner and me through the metal detector. Like flying used to be.

Me too! :)

You too!

My memories of pretty much anything don’t extend back to the 60s. :)

Hi, and welcome! Looking forward to saying hello at #mla13.

*That,* I remember, a whole lot less long ago than the 60s. Yuck, indeed.

Figured out this morning that in the next 2 years I should hit million miler status on UA. I'm either excited or exhausted by the prospect.

Or maybe we could talk about our impending global climate and national infrastructure disasters!

This is my first trip to ASA in eons; the conf has conflicted with AOIR recently. Looking forward to this! #2012ASA

Ooh, thanks for the rec! I hope all is well with you.

Okay, you win. I hope you get good upgrades out of it.

I’ll look forward to it!

Wow, congrats all! That’s huge!

Hey! Looking forward to saying hi.

Just noting that the combo of @Evernote pro from MacHeist & the iPad keyboard @eetempleton talked me into may have changed my travel life.

This one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PRHNHO/

Definitely a good change! With the iPad & keyboard & Evernote, I've got a workflow that meets a lot of my needs.

Writing feels nonthreatening somehow. Plus the keyboard is super comfortable for small hands and leaves the full screen visible.

Replying to @eetempleton, @profhacker and @samplereality

Oh, absolutely. It's pretty awesome.

Of course I should note that I'm just note-taking and rough drafting. Anything more serious may require an actual computer.

I ordered mine the other night on pure impulse, and am so happy I did, already. It's great for public spaces: far smaller footprint.

All I'm gonna say is this: there is a tone of self-satisfaction to overheard conference restaurant conversations that is unmistakable.

OMG. Come on, restaurant music: drown this out!

Yes, please! I'm here for the duration, with very few plans.

I wish. "I really like [name]. She's wonderful. I just don't trust her as a scholar." "Well, my ex-wife's now ex-husband said..."

Not the worst idea I can imagine!

Replying to @samplereality, @surlyf and @eetempleton

It's not. And reading without the keyboard means no cover, as the kb doesn't flip around back. But +

Replying to @samplereality, @surlyf and @eetempleton

you can pull the iPad out of a case to use the kb, and then put it back in for transport or reading.

This is awesome. Just... awesome. h/t http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/11/georgia-senate-gets-52-minute-briefing-united-nations-takeover

That was meant to be h/t @cscannella. Thanks, stupidly sensitive tweet button.

Replying to @surlyF, @eetempleton and @samplereality

I'm less worried about the back than I am dropping it while I'm reading because I am just that graceful.

Replying to @samplereality, @surlyf and @eetempleton

I am pretty painfully aware. Also that you're way more graceful than I am, so...

Amazing stuff, Sam. Seriously. Head-spinning and bewildering, but great work.

Replying to @BendProf, @samplereality and @eetempleton

I do, very much. Even a bit more than I expected to!

Yup.

It’s exhausting to contemplate!

Yeah, I don’t know what to do with that, but I assume the tweet is more recent.

No #ASA2012 shuttle service after 11 am? Really?

Replying to @footnotesrising, @mkgold and @elotroalex

I'm game for whatever, I think. Will look for you.

@footnotesrising @elotroalex Susan, a work issue is sending me back to the hotel to get some stuff done. Email me if anything arises.

I believe the collective noun for all paperwork is “metric crap ton.”

I did, and was trying to track it down again as I wrote, but couldn’t remember where I’d read it. Thanks for passing it on!

It got moved to the room right past where we were this morning.

The player grand piano in the lobby of the conv ctr is beginning to freak me out. Its dramatic rendering of "Desperado" did it. #ASA2012

Yes, that’s the one, & it’s awesome. I traveled with laptop & iPad, but left the laptop in the hotel room thru out the conf.

I don’t think it accidentally woke itself up. I was just careful about how I put it in my bag; it stayed shut once in.

The magnet isn’t terrifically strong & I can see how it could slide open easily; you just have to be careful or get a sleeve.

ORD achieved. Yes, I'm taking the long way home.

Rise up! You have nothing to lose but your chains! And maybe your stock options, but what were they likely to amount to anyhow.

Hey @sleonchnm - hope you made it home in time to see the first 43 seconds!

Car service, headed home from EWR. No AirTrain tonight!

There were some service or maintenance issues, I think. I remember hearing something about that.
