Saturday morning. 6.20 am. Heading home. $$And really hoping to remember which home to head to\.$$

Aaargh left my laptop power cord in the hotel. Happily I have an extra at home for exactly this reason, but aaargh nonetheless.

And I said to myself, as I packed up the laptop, “don’t forget your power cord!”

The moral of the story is that I am slavishly attached to my routines precisely because I am too dumb to function without them.

Exactly. Have just called them. My checkout routine is totally OCD, but when I don’t do it…

I believe it! The brain thinks it has solved the problem by reminding itself, and so lets it go.

The transition was hard on everybody but they seemed to be settling in well when I left & catsitter reports are good!

My routine is a final idiot check - just before I walk out of a hotel room, I do an area by area scan for anything belonging to me.

Totally failed to do it today. sigh.

Whoops! :(

I usually do, too! Too much recent travel has made me lax, though. Must return to obsessive vigilance.

Happily, I checked my boarding pass before heading to my gate at IAH, as I’m flying back into a different airport than I thought. Huh.

Home. And even went to the right one!

Best part so far: the painting is done, so furniture can be put in the proper rooms, and unpacking can commence!

Least great part so far: it’s freaking hot, and I have not yet had the chance to get air conditioners.

I did, however, find a pair of shorts. So there’s that.

Aw, sadness! // RT @TenuredRadical: Boy the way Glenn Miller played....goodbye, Jean Stapleton/Edith Bunker $$"But Ahhh\-chie\!"$$ #teeveelegend

The good news! Is I found the coffee grinder! The bad news. Is I have found neither the kettle nor another water-boiling vessel.

Thanks for answering, Matt; I was offline all yesterday!

Moving update $$because I know you’re dying for one$$: The apartment is about 50% unpacked, I think. It’s still awesome in a prospective way.

However! The heat this weekend was not kind to life on the top floor. Must order air conditioners today.

No, we’re actually very much the same. This move has been MISERABLE for exactly that reason. +

I got moved in Tues nt late & had to leave town Weds. Got back Sat afternoon & did nothing but unpack for the rest of the wknd.

Kitchen is just about done. Rest of the house is a disaster still.

Am hoping so! It’s taking a LONG TIME to cool off in here, though. $$And guess what: I’m traveling tomorrow\!$$

More or less, yeah.

Yay, congrats!

As a colleague of mine said yesterday, if it’s Tuesday, it must be DC. Hello, Amtrak!

How nice to be welcomed home. // RT @Amtrak: @kfitz Hello there! And welcome back to the tracks. Enjoy the ride.

Thank you, Jean-Claude!

If you’re thinking in another direction, though, let me know!

Hello, DC! You’re very shiny today.

Srsly.

Not much, though; it’s darn well perfect out there!

Thanks to everybody at #LCI2013 for a great conversation this afternoon! I hope the rest of the week is fruitful for you.

My new apartment is 2 blocks from an amazing farmers market. Since I moved, I have not been home on a Saturday to take advantage of it. Sad!

Yes! Someday I’ll actually get to go.

While I remain very sad to have missed #thatcamp yet again this year, I am very happy to have finished unpacking!

Well, everything except hanging the pictures, that is.

And dealing with the 39 boxes of books that should be arriving from California. #uhoh

I will not combust. I will not combust. I will not combust. I will not combust.

A new mantra, for a new day.

FURY. Or really, really deep frustration.

Frustration followed me home. I give up, day. Let's try again tomorrow.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that my Time Capsule died yesterday?

Thinking I may just get a new extreme. Am backing up elsewise these days.

I'm a little behind the curve, but HUGE congratulations, and well deserved!

Aw man.

RT @distractify: 1. Lie down
2. Try not to cry
3. Cry a lot :'(

I have done ALL THE THINGS.

$$Ok, I have done three of the things\. But it’s the most productive day in a while, so I’m celebrating anyhow\.$$

Oh, one of my faves!

Hey, congratulations! That’s great news.

It's possible that I'm too easily impressed at the end of a long day. But Amazon's systems just made my head explode. +

I was due for a regular subscription shipment today. And I'd placed a totally separate order for a couple of other things two days ago. +

Both arrived today in the same box. It was like crossing the streams, man. -

Got up early this morning to go run. Let a light rain persuade me not to. Wound up writing instead. A reasonable tradeoff, I think.

That is a very strange association.

I see your Outlook, and raise you Lotus Notes. (Now replaced, thank goodness. So I can access my email anywhere. +

And so can the NSA!)

That... I... I mean...

I am still sputtering.

That guy is really prolific!

"Ladies are everywhere in publishing! At the reception desk, in the copy room, bringing me my coffee..."

I'm also really curious what experience led him to the conclusion that The Most Sexist Industry Ever is theater.

So here’s a surprise: when I spend a full week in the office, I manage to get a lot done. I might have to try this more often!

“Get Things Done… By Having Time to Do Them!”

No, srsly: I accomplished ALL THE THINGS today. Is it planetary alignment? Or just that everybody knows I’m headed out for several weeks?

Makes all too much sense - and yet seems impossible to induce artificially.

$$Though several huge pieces of info I was waiting on to close out projects arrived today too\. So it wasn’t just my mindset\.$$

I know, right?

How very disciplined of you, heh heh.

This summer’s adventure: Geneva, Göttingen, London, Prague. Three conferences, followed by a lot of being still and writing. Starts today!

Prague is the being still and writing part!

Thank you! I certainly hope to.

Hoping I’m not forgetting anything crucial. Here we go!

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get an article linked on FB into Pocket using my iPhone. I am not that dumb, really.

I was afraid of that. You know, if I copy a link and open Pocket, it would be awesome if it would ask if I want a new item w/it.

The suitcases people try to get away with carrying onto planes, I swear.

Just saw a woman go by w/a hard-sided suitcase too wide to fit in the aisle. How she plans to get it in the overhead is a mystery.

I hear you. Like it hasn’t been 12 years or anything.

That Is Perfect.

SERIOUSLY. The fee should apply to overhead bin space, if anything. $$I’d pay it\.$$

Now *that’s* packing light.

I hate to mention the status of the seat next to mine on this very full plane, because I’m pretty sure I cannot possibly be this lucky.

But they’re closing the overhead bins. And fussing about electronic devices. #breathheld

There is a duty-free crisis taking place. Someone has someone else’s bourbon. #travelfun

Thank you!

As I suspected: delayed incoming flight, and 22B is now occupied. But the fixed armrest means it would only have been magazine space anyhow.

Nice!

Pulled away from gate 20 mins late. Stopped about 100 meters away. Waited for new flight plan. Now waiting for storm to pass, engines off.

At least I can complain about it.

Ok, out. Fingers crossed.

Thoughts so far: Geneva is pretty! And it’s an easy city to arrive in, with free public transit vouchers. $$And then there was a 4 hour nap\.$$

Ooh, good to know -- thanks!

It’ll be less tourism than writing retreat, but it should be fantastic nonetheless. Definitely worth trying!

That guy. I swear to god.

I assume the latter as well, but the former is more fun to consider. What's the end game in that option?

I have had ALL the caffeine today but still jet lag is kicking my butt, to the extent that I’m not sure I’ll make it through the afternoon.

Felt awful enough that I headed back to the hotel to lie down. Not sure whether I'll make it out for this evening's reception at CERN.

Thanks! It's just the usual killer jet lag, about which I am very whiny.

Well, *I* made it out to CERN. The rest of the conference not so much. A nice reception for me, though!

Just in general $$which would be well\-deserved$$ or in response to something specific?

OH! Super cool! Go @ekansa!

Good morning, Geneva! That night’s sleep? That was what I was talking about.

New post at Planned Obsolescence: Getting Back to $$My Own$$ Work http://wp.me/p2w8Sh-DL

This picture was taken at 8pm. There was a hailstorm at about 4pm. It’s been about 70 degrees all evening. #crazytown

Will confess to a teeny bit of envy over having to miss attending the WH Champions of Change event, but so happy for @ekansa and @WillNoel!

New post at Planned Obsolescence: Eleven. http://wp.me/s2w8Sh-eleven

That storm was crazy; the hail here caused a bunch of damage. $$I’m in Geneva\.$$

Enjoy your vacation! Between it being 93 degrees two days ago and the hail yesterday, it’s a good time to be away.

Sadly, no; I’m here for OAI 8: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=211600

Thank you! It’s been lovely being here. I head off to Germany tomorrow, but will hope to come back sometime.

Yes, definitely! // RT @openmarin: @kfitz quotes only UK/US examples in DH. Still work to do to make the whole DH world visible. #oai8

Hmmm. Perhaps the folks behind REKn might have a suggestion? http://english.uvic.ca/newsandevents/rekn_joins_world-leading_nines_initiative_arc.html

Thanks to everyone for a great #OAI8. Geneva was lovely and the conversations were excellent. On to Göttingen!

The conference organizers should be posting them, if they haven’t already.

I can't swear to it, but @MichaelBerube1 implicates me in the history of his decision to blog, and I started in 2002, so...

Replying to @pannapacker, @BendProf and @MichaelBerube1

Absolutely. Also 2002-2003ish.

Instant tears: Equal protection, not states’ rights. #scotus #doma

From @SCOTUSblog: “DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.”

Indeed. // RT @katinalynn: Overjoyed about DOMA. Heartsick about VRA. What a crazy couple of days.

The ruling is not just that SCOTUS doesn’t have standing, it’s that the 9th didn’t have standing.

At least if I’m following the logic, which is not a cinch.

Yes, that.

Happy anniversary!

Sunday, noonish. Very much looking forward!

Evidence is all anecdotal, as pubs don’t much share sales info. Also, hard to know what sales would have been otherwise. +

That said, sales of PO were a good bit higher than I think NYUP expected, and I’ve heard the same from other authors/presses.

I haven’t heard that about books. I have heard claims that going OA with journal articles has resulted in declining subscriptions.

I’m going to assume that you checked that tweet and the baggage handlers have only just found it.

To all my friends who are currently moving $$e\.g\., @msbonn @ayjay @xina, etc$$, oh, I feel ya. Sending good vibes and fast friendly movers.

Mind. Blown.

Now I feel like I fell down on the job: I’ve been in at least one room with both of you! Glad you’ve finally met.

Apparently! I was clearly not thinking.

Hello, London! You're very shiny and warm today.

My room is on the back side of the hotel $$& so is quiet\!$$, but the view by the elevators on my floor looks like this.

Why, thank you! It’s very London-y around here. $$Except for all the sun and warmth, I guess\.$$

Seriously cool!

Ooh, do tell. Could do with a good dinner.

It is inspiring, isn’t it! I’m here for a conference at the BL.
