Congratulations, Melissa — I hope it’s a great day!

Sending all my best thoughts today to my friends at @NEH_ODH and elsewhere in the government. Thank you for everything you do on our behalf.

Here’s hoping you get to enjoy the vast majority of the month back in the office.

I did not! The things a person can discover.

RT @MLACommons: Go beyond prepared papers at #mla14 with dynamic, innovative session formats: http://convention.commons.mla.org/?p=250. How are you structuri…

Indeed! I will hope for awesome things ahead.

Hey, excellent! We will have to introduce you to our favorite bars. Um, places. I mean places.

Appropriate and family friendly.

Dude, I live in Park Slope. I’ve been in bars where there were more people under 5 than over 21.

Awesome.

Hello, Chicago! I’m giving the Dean’s Lecture at Columbia College this evening. Hope to see some of you there.

:(

Ridiculously gorgeous early October day here in Chicago. Surprised the House hasn’t found a way to shut this weather down.

Yes. // RT @ekansa @amandafrench I don’t know what to say. I’m so sorry about @NEH_ODH and, though this sounds corny, the whole country. :(

My former student who is a House staffer is dutifully reporting - unpaid - from the Hill.

14 House R’s now publicly support the Senate’s clean CR. Bring it to the floor, Boehner. Let our government work.

Oh, @beccarosen only got to see *some* of the best stuff. I see no reference to suffering Her Majesty’s grievous indignation.

Not that I recall… but migraines do funny things to my memory.

Thanks for the link; good to know!

Excellent!

Good to know - thanks!

In the last three weeks: Bethlehem-Rochester-home; Ithaca-Baton Rouge-home; Minneapolis-Chicago-home.

For this week’s adventure, Tripit just informed me that my flight home has been cancelled.

I’m rebooked two hours later, thank goodness. But I am nonetheless feeling quite whiny about it all. I just want to go home.

And I am trying very hard not to ponder what adventure next week’s Oxford-Fairfax-home will bring.

Thank you! It was great getting to talk a bit.

Thank you! It was a great conversation.

Happily, made it home in plenty of time for Bill T. Jones, A Rite, tonight at BAM. http://www.bam.org/dance/2013/a-rite?alttemplate=mobileevent&date=

Rock on! Congrats, all.

GRRRRR. I am so, so sorry that #shutdown is interfering with such important connections!

It’s Sunday. I’m at EWR. My flight is 45 minutes late. All is sadly about as right with the world as it gets. #sigh

Is there a weary frequent flyer emoji?

Just infuriating. I’m so sorry.

She is, indeed.

Congratulations!!! Fantastic news!

Thank you for the tour! It was great getting to see some of what you’re up to - I’ll look forward to hearing how things develop.

Thank you! It was great getting to talk with you and your colleagues.

Today’s adventure: CVG > ORD > DCA > #thatcampleadership. The good news: enough time for a proper breakfast in CVG.

That is not right.

Woo!

If I can engage the brain cells after this coffee, I just may. :)

RT @brandontlocke: The Open Access convo is often science-centric - I'm thrilled to see @brettbobley and @kfitz taking part in the @SPARC_N…

On the plane at ORD, ready to get to DCA and points beyond. See some of you at the Well.

Bizarrely enough, the cup I had on the plane was decent, if only by comparison.

DCA & Metro achieved. See you soon, GMU.

Woo hoo!

Trying to coax a bit of a charge back I to my dead phone battery before heading down to the Well.

You said it, man.

Feel better!

Buffet. Pretty decent options. Most of us are now back in the bar.

Whoa, interesting. This is the first time that any stream-crossing has been brought to my attention.

Replying to @benwbrum, @ryancordell and @sergenoiret

Makes me wonder what crossed convos I’ve missed.

I really wanted macaroni & cheese.

I never remember to do that. Maybe I need an auto-away message that triggers when my inbox hits a certain level.

“Whoops, @kfitz must be on a plane or something. She’ll get back to you… some day.”

Now that’s just crazy talk.

Replying to @tjowens, @boone and @amandafrench

I’m my own worst enemy in this regard. I need to stop apologizing for “delays” of less than a week in replies.

Good grief, @triproftri. I’m so glad you’re all safe. You’ve more than earned that donut!

Ah, #thatcamp friends, it was lovely to see you. I hope you're enjoying the Well, while @shanakimball and I sit silently in the quiet car.

:-|

You almost make me begin to regret the quiet car. Almost.

Are his younger colleagues as uncomfortable with the monologue as they look?

Holy... Unbelievable.

I think she may actually have been on the Glengarry Glen Ross Train.

Now that’s an awesome 404 page.

The ongoing drama of aging cats: Kitty #1 has adjusted to the thyroid ear goo, has started gaining weight, and shows normal blood work. +

Had a very alarming moment with Kitty #2 last night, though, who suddenly could not walk without listing to one side. +

She seemed to recover, but is clearly not feeling well. So back we go to the vet this morning. #sad

He thinks, therefore he is.

Thanks for the good wishes — and all best to you and your little one.

Today will be spent in part awaiting test results on Kitty #2. In-office tests were inconclusive, as I suspect the sent-out tests will be.

Everything continues to suggest diabetes, though her blood glucose was only a hair outside the high end of normal. But we’ll see.

Thanks for the good thoughts!

The good news is that then @brettbobley will be able to deal with it in its entirety, rather than at the molecular level.

I hear rumors of a #cunypie in the very, very near future...

Replying to @rrkennison, @GeorgeOnline and @eetempleton

Nothing yet, which is aggravating. Another scary moment with her yesterday. Really want answers. :(

Replying to @eetempleton, @rrkennison and @GeorgeOnline

No kidding! It’d make things a lot simpler. Though cats are sneaky and like to pretend they’re fine.

Totally effing inconclusive test results on Kitty #2 again. Now running another test, and if that’s inconclusive, we’re on to an ultrasound.

The waiting and seeing is a bit hard, as she’s clearly not feeling well a fair bit of the time.

So happy for my fed friends that they can get back to doing the important work they’re committed to. Thanks to them for hanging in there.

Replying to @nowviskie, @Purdom_L and @scholarslab

Fabulous news! Congratulations, all!

Rats, I’m booked. Keep me on the list, though!

The latest Kitty #2 update: more extensive test results, so inconclusive that they’re negative. On to the specialist. :(

Indeed, thank you! $$Now maybe I’ll post again someday…$$

I'd have to do some poking around; I pay way too little attention to what's going on in contemporary poetry. But I'll ponder!

Haircut. Ramen. Now maybe a nap. The only problem with Saturday is that there’s only one a week.

New post at Planned Obsolescence: Engage. Disengage. Repeat. http://wp.me/p2w8Sh-Fp

Backatcha. And thanks.

Touché.

I did. It’s pretty hilarious. $$My “touché” lost its sarcasm in the typing\.$$

Key line from the Loehr & Schwartz book I mention in http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/blog/engage-disengage-repeat/: “Is the life I am living worth what I am giving up to have it?”

Ha. I take the line to be pointing to the separation between the values that lead us to a path & the ways we work once we’re on it.

The path is the right one; it’s just the means of walking it that need adjustment.

Ha again. I should have known!

Yes, I think so. But also what are you giving up that you might not be aware you’re giving up, and is it a choice or a default.

*fist bump*

RT @brettbobley: Monday: Looking forward to speaking on a @SPARC_NA panel at World Bank w/ @kfitz @sutefune @CameronNeylon @stebbins @hjose…

I am on a southbound train. I have green tea, oatmeal, and a ton of work to do. But no suitcase, because I get to head back home tonight!

Hmm. The conductor just announced that there’s a problem with the wi-fi, but it’s working quite well for me. Perhaps that’s the problem.

So happy that @brettbobley and @stebbins can speak at the @SPARC_NA @WorldBank event today $$w/me, @sutefune @CameronNeylon @hjoseph$$. +

The #oaweek kickoff would not have been the same without them. http://live.worldbank.org/open-access-week-2013

The @SPARC_NA @WorldBank #OAWeek kickoff event was terrific fun! Thanks, @hjoseph @brettbobley @CameronNeylon @stebbins @sutefune.

Now back to Union Station and points north.

Aw shucks. You are much too kind!

The entire #oaweek kickoff panel was great, but @brettbobley was particularly awesome, with epigraphy and papyrology at his disposal!

I fear I’ve used my Amtrak wifi karma quotient for the year.

Very sorry to be missing #HumToday, but grateful for tweeting by @rgfeal @amndw2 and @katinalynn!

Okay, I give; the brain has clearly given up on work for today. Novel reading time instead.

Criminy.

It’s time to call an end to the pedantry of plural “data.” The overflow of digital records makes data’s multiplicity a singular problem.

So knock it off.

Super, super cool! Congrats!

I know, right? How much you want to bet THEY DON’T PUT THE YEAR IN THE NAME THIS TIME.

He said “free with OS X purchase,” but the new OS X upgrade is free, so… Free?

Hey cool! Thanks for letting me know.

RT @BryanAlexander: "The point, as founder and CEO David Blake has said, is to “jailbreak the degree.”" http://gigaom.com/2013/10/02/microsoft-joins-degreeds-crusade-to-jailbreak-the-degree/

You know what’s the best way to “jailbreak the degree”? FULLY FUND STATE UNIVERSITIES. http://gigaom.com/2013/10/02/microsoft-joins-degreeds-crusade-to-jailbreak-the-degree/

You misunderstand. The price tag is so high because of the withdrawal of federal/state support for higher education. +

Unlike the case of health care, there is no bad actor getting rich off of tuition payments, except in the for-profit sector. +

True. I’m not suggesting universities don’t need to reconsider priorities. But those shiny things are coming at the expense of +

having a stable, full-time faculty. So absolutely, those things need examination.

But those expenses are not the primary problem. The primary problem is the defunding of higher education on the federal level.

WHOA.

Uh, paging @amandafrench and THATCamp SoCal organizers? Seen this lately? http://www.thatcampsocal.org/

@adelinekoh Could you change the link that’s on my name here: http://digped2014.thatcamp.org/propose/ $$Follow it and you’ll see why\!$$

Honestly, almost anything else. My blog. My profile on another functioning THATCamp site.

It’s an eye-opener this early in the morning.

Many, many thanks!

The link was to http://thatcampsocal.org, which must have been taken over from the actual THATCamp SoCal organizers…

I think so, yes, though perhaps @amandafrench @ddchamberlain or @profwernimont can help confirm?

“More hack, less yack” takes on terrifying new dimensions.

Thanks, Amanda. I can’t stop wondering what Google must think of me now!

Not true! If you paid for iWork 09, even the box version, the upgrade is free. Is a bug in the App Store.

Search http://discussions.apple.com. I found a few suggestions $$incl sign out & back in to the App Store$$.

If all else fails, email support. Apparently they can issue a code for “purchase” if need be.

Congratulations!

So sorry not to be there, but we’re waving at you from the MLA! $$And sending huge congratulations, to boot\!$$

Sounds like you should get in on @pmhswe’s day instead.

Well that’s awesome. And deserves a little Nina Simone of its own!

Ah, Louisiana. Just makes you nostalgic, doesn’t it?
