Have a great one, Seth. it's a different experience on the other side!

I’ve heard of some people who are so lazy they have kids in order to get them to do the shoveling.

We’ve used a mobile web app the last few years, to ensure maximum cross-platform usability. http://mla14.org

I hate to tell you, but there may be a problem getting into LGA tomorrow too…

Actually, yes. The storm watch is from 6pm tonight to 1pm tomorrow.

Mine are crossed for you.

Yuck. I hate prednisone. I hope it does the good things quickly, and the bad things not for long at all.

:(

Nice! Thanks for tweeting this.

I think it’s a pre-#MLA14 method of helping us avoid the weather version of the bends.

Lisa! Just saw this - I hope you’re doing well! I think practices differ among institutions, but editorship is often +

taken in the category of “service to the profession.” The MLA CSE has been working on promoting an understanding of +

editing as scholarly work, however. There’s a session at #MLA14: http://www.mla.org/program_details?prog_id=409&year=2014

I’m sorry to hear that! I hope we’ll get to cross paths someplace else before long. And I’ll prod the CSE to post session info+

to @MLACommons.

Indeed. There are also some great folks in writing studies working on these issues.

True. Let’s be in touch after the convention!

RT @MLACommons: New post from the office of scholarly communications: “Developing New Book Projects on MLA Commons” http://scholcomm.commons.mla.org/developing-new-book-projects-on-mla-commons/ …

We’re experimenting w/developing new projects on @MLACommons. Come join us or use the platform for yr own experiment! http://commons.mla.org

Would depend a lot on the trajectory I was trying to trace. Maybe The Golden Notebook.

Which, duh, Lessing was. Why did I lump her into American?

Indeed.

Very cool. I will ponder…

Ooh, Geek Love is brilliant.

Atwood is enormous fun, and the Oryx & Crake trilogy would count as big both ways.

God, yes. That’s what I was trying to remember.

@briancroxall Oh, and Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible.

Heh. It’s made the last chunk of the work week more interesting!

Oh, there’s nothing like the weekend. Go to bed thinking “yay, I can sleep in!” Wake up at 4.45 am for no reason.

$$At least there can be a nap\.$$

Have you seen the revised draft proposal for restructuring the MLA’s divisions and discussion groups? http://groupsdiscussion.commons.mla.org +

Like the first draft, it’s open for comment. http://groupsdiscussion.commons.mla.org/ And there’s an open hearing on it at #mla14. http://www.mla.org/program_details?prog_id=119&year=2014

There is also a set of general @MLACommons email notifications settings within your profile.

Replying to @cjprender, @GeorgeOnline and @MLACommons

However we seem to be having difficulty with the system disobeying those settings for uploaded docs.

Replying to @cjprender, @GeorgeOnline and @MLACommons

Needless to say, we’re looking into it.

Oh no. I'm so sorry, Sharon, :(

Ah, LaGuardia. We meet again. *narrows eyes*

On the plane. Chicago and #MLA14, here we come!

Hello, Chicago. They tell me it’s 1. At least that’s a positive number.

Thanks! I hope all went fabulously with yours.

It’s supposed to be 18 tomorrow, and then in the 20s on Friday, and in the 30s Sat & Sun. Practically spring! #MLA14

Poor things! I can’t imagine what it must have been like for them. $$Where in LA? I want to say north, but may be wrong\.$$

That’s what I thought. $$Not the Duck Dynasty part\.$$ I grew up in BR, went to LSU.

:)

Drupal. $$At least I think that's what HASTAC is using\. MediaCommons definitely is\.$$

Thank you, Sharon!

Oh, Sharon. I'm so sorry. :(

I'm glad for that. Hugs to you, though.

RT @MLACommons: A few updates, just in time for #mla14! Highlights: Improved accessibility, better search, cleaner dashboard. http://t.co/m…

Noooooo! I’m so sorry.

Neat things you may notice in the @MLACommons updates we pushed live today: “Activity” now highlights important updates. +

“Groups” now indicate whether they belong to official committees, divisions, and discussion groups. @MLACommons +

The updated toolbar functions better with all blog themes. And search… well, it actually *finds stuff*. @MLACommons.

Thank you!

Alas, there’s a bug somewhere in the notifications system; it’s ignoring the settings for uploads. We’re working on it.

You rock, @nowviskie. Sorry not to get to see you around #MLA14, but glad you’re helping us grok regardless. http://nowviskie.org/2014/on-the-origin-of-hack-and-yack/

Have you met Occupy MLA Elevator $$aka @Intuitionist5$$ yet?

That right there is a question.

See p. 3: http://www.mla.org/pdf/2014conventionguide3web.pdf If you made your res thru MLA housing, wifi charges should not appear on your final bill.

That is how it's supposed to go. If there are any problems, you can talk to someone in one of the headquarters offices.

Hello, #MLA14! Have you joined @MLACommons? Stop by the welcome center $$Marriott, 5th floor$$ for info & assistance. http://commons.mla.org

That’s correct!

The best part: it’s all but empty compared to the NYC version.

Truly. I just told folks over lunch: if there’s a station you couldn’t get into, now’s your chance.

Session on Variorum Editing beginning in Cook room, 3rd floor, Marriott. #mla14 #s56

Or Lobby Level 3 registration, Sheraton.

Hearing from Daniel Joseph Ransom on the history of the Variorum Chaucer. #mla14 #s56

Say hi for me too. And both of you thoroughly tweet #s66 while I’m over here in #s56!

Ransom: recent, disputed shift in meaning of “variorum” from collection of commentaries to edition containing variant readings. #mla14 #s56

Ransom: Critical editions attempt to trace steps back to putative original. Variorum editions seek to trace changes. #mla14 #s56

You’re missed as well. You were just invoked — or your avatar was, anyhow!

Yup!

Now up in #mla14 #s56, Jeffrey Johnson and Gary Stringer of the Donne Variorum.

Now up in #mla14 #s56, Edward Jones on the Milton Variorum.

So sorry to hear that! Feel better soon.

Fantastic! I’m glad you’re here with us, though sorry you’re not able to be there with them.

Hey, you’re in the room I am in!

Halfway up, left side, next to Matt Jockers.

Hey, you’re here! Everybody is sitting behind me.

Open hearing on the draft proposal for restructuring the divisions and discussion groups starts at 5.15 in Chicago VI, Sheraton. #mla14

I specifically dug mine from last year out in @Brinkmanship’s memory. *snif*

Big announcement from @rgfeal: #mla16 will be our first meeting in Austin!

Will look forward to seeing you!

Oh yes. I will rent a car for a field trip to Salt Lick.

Even better: breakfast tacos!

Marianne Hirsch being introduced before her presidential address by @rgfeal. #mla14

Fantastic news!

Thank *you*, Natalie! It was great seeing you, if only in passing.

Thanks, Chicago, for a great #mla14. Homeward bound.

@wynkenhimself Happy birthday! I’d have celebrated with you in Chicago had I known it was so close.

Weirdly, we’ve been occupied with other things the last few days! We’re looking into it, though.

I’ll let you know as we figure it out. There’s a chance that the issue will require a fix at a deeper layer $$CBOX, BP$$.

The good news, though, is that the file upload activity should slow dramatically.

Trust me, I completely understand! Good luck getting everything started.

Grab one for me, will you? I’m dying here.

Nice!

Congratulations! Very excited for you and UNC both!

Does this mean you’re going? If so, congrats!

But one of
the great things about Wikipedia is that anyone $$except @jmcclurken$$ can fix that!

Huge congrats. I will look forward to hearing all about it!

Oh no! George, I’m so sorry.

There is a small part of my brain that sometimes mistakes @bfister tweets for @LibSkrat tweets & vv. AND NOW THEY HAVE THE SAME AVATAR.

It freaks me out just a bit.

Okay, so it's not technically the same avatar, but the same large overlay on similarly-toned avatars. STILL.

I hear you. And I’m really sorry.

Trust me, I know.

Have you explored Profession on @MLACommons? Publicly accessible discussions of key issues in higher ed today. http://profession.commons.mla.org

Thank you! We’re very excited about the ways it will help us create timely discussions with a broadened audience.

Attempting to create a plan for a Very Large New Project today. It’s more than a little daunting.

One bite at a time, I know, but figuring out how to take that first bite is hard.

Oh no.

@wynkenhimself In honor of your birthday week, I am drinking a killer rye Manhattan. I hope you are, too.

+1000 // RT @JenHoward: Could the next 50 weeks of 2014 arrange to be less combative and surly than the first two, please?

It's also a holiday today, so we're not in the office. Amplification to follow!

RT @rgfeal: In sum: I welcome the serious involvement of members and potential allies. May you all find positive ways to make change happen.

Nice! Where from?

I know it’s a trying day, Amtrak. And it’s good to know that my train is delayed. But even better would be some kind of guesstimate. +

Like “don’t wander too far from the monitor!” Or “may as well go ahead and eat your dinner.”

129 out of NYP, headed to WAS. Thanks for checking!

It’s actually 129. Same situation?

That’s… really, really unfortunate.

“Hey, it’s a movie people love about a dog people love! What could be better?”

Ugh, so sorry. Once we got going it took us just under 5 hours. The doors kept freezing shut, which made stops slow & difficult.

RT @AULibrary: Public & @wrlc welcome for "The humanities in and for the digital age" w/ @kfitz tomorrow, 10:30am! RSVP http://t.co/GjzPQ4H…

That talk at AU is today at 10 - come say hi!

Um, that talk is at 10.30. You’ve still got time! // RT @kfitz: That talk at AU is today at 10 - come say hi!

Maybe I should drink this coffee first.

Agreed. I’m not sure which camp I fall into, but either way I think it’s a great idea.

Aw, thanks! It was a great conversation. Looking forward to catching up at @SPARC_NA!

I have shut off a LOT of people’s RTs.

Srsly.

Replying to @jbj, @wynkenhimself, @dancohen and @ayjay

So far as I know. I think they’d have to see your feed to know that you’d silenced RTs.

True - though that is overwhelmed for me by abusive RTers that drown my feed.

Only???

Suet curious about the talk as a whole.

Uh, that was super, not suet. Thanks, autocorrect.

Fair enough. Was it paired with another perspective? Or was it a session by itself?

I approve.

I… I just… Wow.

In for my annual mammogram today. Last year’s resulted in an ultrasound, needle biopsy, and $$thank god$$ an all-clear.

Today’s ultrasound involved a lot of pictures in a lot of places. Waiting now for the results.

I’ve done this every year for ten years now, and it doesn’t seem to get easier. But I’m grateful for access to good care.

And all clear.

It is, as the man said, the hardest part.

Another snowfall. Another travel day. Another set of train delays & cancellations. Need to be in Philly by 9.30. Cross your fingers for me.

So much for the QUIET car, eh, guys in suits?

I always forget that!

NYC, happily.

There is a particular joy in seeing quiet-car-flouting guys in suits get fussed at by the conductor. There is probably a German word for it.

YES.

Today in Philadelphia: @MLAnews is hosting a meeting with reps of ARL, CLIR, AHA, ACLS & others to discuss preservation and primary records.

I have only ever been able to approve via the web. SO frustrating. If you find an alternative, let me know.

Good to know - thanks!

Suited dude behind me finally stopped talking, put on headphones — and promptly started humming along.

Dude, I do not think “inaudible” means what you think it means.

Thankfully, mine is not That Guy in That Suit.

Not in this meeting, alas - but this is the start of a long project, and I’d love to get @archivists_org involved!
