Thank you, elaborate bank security system, for getting to the very last step in a 5min process before telling me my browser is too advanced.

Ah, July, when my kitchen garbage goes from “hey, just some coffee grinds chilling” to “oh my god what died in here” in nothing flat.

A fantastic exploration of the English major barista joke, both why it’s untrue and what it’s getting at. https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2016/07/06/cultural-implications-myth-english-majors-end-working-permanently-starbucks-essay

I grew up in Baton Rouge. I still have family there. I am disheartened, disgusted. Outraged. And sadly, sadly, unsurprised. #AltonSterling

Sadly, sadly true. And so much more that doesn’t get directly mentioned. The radical economic inequality. + http://uproxx.com/news/baton-rouge-ferguson-missouri/

The complete disinvestment in the public school system resulting from white flight during the era of the consent decree. +

The crippling history of political corruption. And so much more. +

My heart breaks for my hometown. I hope the many good people there are able to take this opportunity to fight for real and lasting change.

Sending you <3

It’s less frightening to look at. But it is the least of the sins that was committed yesterday.

The following is from a letter I received this morning from a market research firm, asking me to take an extensive survey:

Because of your position & accomplishments, it is undeniable that the issues which you devote your time & effort to are highly significant.

I do not even know where to begin with this sentence, much less the assumptions behind its convoluted logic.

The letter does read that way. The firm is in NY, which isn’t really evidence against, but… I don’t know.

I will stipulate again this morning that I am anti-plagiarism. Plagiarism is bad.

But whatever it might mean about the campaign’s incompetence or its failures of integrity, there are many worse things at work here.

We face a moment in which one party’s “rallying cry [is] that the opposing candidate should be imprisoned.” http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/violence-blood-and-betrayal-inside-the-trump-potemkin-village

This, in a stew of racism, xenophobia, and misogyny, I find terrifying.

Focusing on the originality of expression of these ideas only allows them to grow.

No, seriously. Why has the live feed cut away from what sounds like some great speeches about Muslim Americans to show a backstage video?

This has been an exhilarating and draining week. I am thrilled to have gotten the chance to watch history being made.

I am also recognizing that a whole lot of history gets made after my usual bedtime. So I am grateful to have a bit of a respite.

But while I am old enough that I want to go to sleep super early these days, I am also old enough that I wake up super early.

So: history made. But with miles to go yet. I am awake and ready.

Seriously, *that* moment. I cannot remember things I read last week, but this I’ve held onto for twenty years.
