I recognize that there are many worse crimes in the world, but any retailer that would slap a non-peelable sticker on a book cover is deserving of some serious retributive justice.

As it turns out, it was. Over the course of two highly -- *eventful* years, let's call them -- I read and thought and wrote a bunch about generosity, about the public good, and about the challenges facing today's institutions of higher education. #generousthinking

Wed Feb 28 14:54:11 +0000 2018

Just about two years ago, I gave a talk at the University of Richmond that I thought might turn out to be the first chunk of a new book project: http://www.plannedobsolescence.net/generous-thinking-the-university-and-the-public-good/ #generousthinking

My argument -- and my sense of what that public good is and how best to serve it -- is of course only one perspective, an inevitably partial one. So I'm hoping to put it in dialogue with yours. #generousthinking

All of us who care about the future of higher education -- faculty, students, administrators, alumni, parents, policymakers, and more -- need to think together about how to create and support institutions that might best serve the public good. #generousthinking

Those challenges are legion. Those of us who work on campus often focus on the external challenges -- austerity, anti-intellectualism, political attack. But many of the problems we face originate inside the house. #generousthinking
