Seriously. I’m all in favor of the neologism when there’s nothing else that really serves. But this one was in a context like “the learnings from this webinar” and just #no.

I once showed up to give a keynote at a large conference only to have the video guy take one look at me and tell me to go change. I was wearing a black suit with a purple shirt, and they had me against a black curtain. +

If this was such an issue, I could have been told in advance, maybe. But an hour before the keynote, when I’ve flown across the country for ONE DAY? I am wearing what I am wearing, and you can change your damn curtain.

It’s important to acknowledge! Sending you all my best.

Completely, 💯. So many things we need to talk about way more openly, and so many breaks we need to cut ourselves.

Oh no. That’s terrible.

Hanging in so far, but I think there are still more shoes to drop.

This totally made my morning. Thank you :)

Hello, higher ed leaders. Today’s question: if Hopkins can’t do it safely, can you? https://twitter.com/lindsayaellis/status/1291499644921556995

I have heard nothing from my own campus even beginning to approach a 2x-weekly testing frequency. And if that’s an “incomplete defense,” we have effectively built a chain-link fence against a tidal wave.

1. This is the cost of not reopening, true. And the cost of reopening campuses where every germ spreads like wildfire will be 1000s of lives. The financial losses you describe are terrible. The human losses I describe are immoral.

And 2. These financial costs derive from the privatization of higher education and its transformation into a business. Had we not lost the sense of education as a public good, we’d have the state backing required not to have to put dollars over lives.

Oh no. This is a huge loss. I am devastated. https://twitter.com/CecilyRaynor/status/1291721904609546247

The fact of needing to balance the budget is not in question. The question is HOW. Over the last 40 years the revenue model for higher ed has shifted dramatically from state funding to tuition paid by families and students.

THAT’s why this crisis is becoming a disaster: because we’re now in a position in which we have to sacrifice lives in order to retain student dollars. It shouldn’t be that way.

Stéfan and I shared a campus visit to another Canadian institution some years ago, and I was delighted to have that chance to get to know him a little better. He was brilliant, and generous, and extraordinarily kind: much too unusual a combination.

It’s been a painful, difficult few months for all of us. We’re over-stretched and under-supported. And I think a lot of us are nearing breaking points.

My own resilience is nearing its limits, and the sorrows and stresses of today are highlighting that.

I tried and failed to clear my calendar this week so that I could get some down time. And the weeks ahead look increasingly rough.

Going into this fall without any time off this summer is not feeling great. So I’m going to close the computer down for the rest of the afternoon, put myself in a chair, and read a book.

Sending all of you wishes for whatever you need to restore yourselves in preparation for the work ahead.

This turns out to have been a pretty good afternoon to have my eyes dilated so I can’t read especially on here.

Then again I might need to have my eyes dilated every Friday afternoon for the foreseeable future.

Heartbreaking, necessary reading. I am grateful that MSU changed course before we had to face situations like the ones described here — but I’m devastated for my colleagues around the country, and I’m worried about higher education’s future in the wake of this awfulness. https://twitter.com/annehelen/status/1298272223149436933
