Activism for the Radically Lazy

Follow these directions:

1. Call Governor Schwartzenegger: 916-445-2841 (they’re apparently accepting calls from anywhere).

2. Push: 2 (voice your opinion on legislation).

3. Push: 1 (gender-neutral marriage bill – Senate Bill 849).

4. And push: 1 to support marriage equality.

Of course, the conspiracy theorist in my brain has me convinced that all the 1 calls are being dumped, while the 2s are being carefully tallied. But we’ll see…

  1. Wow, making a difference has never been so push-button easy. 🙂

  2. As someone who has been on the receiving end of zillions of those types of calls (albeit in a Senate office, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same kind of deal), I applaud wholeheartedly the effort to automate this ugly process, which in my experience is full of name-calling and vitriolic rants that result in complete and utter disgust with supporters on both sides of any issue.

As for your inner conspiracy theorist, I’d say it’s more likely that the system exists to help people feel like they’re making a difference, and that while all the calls are tallied, the results are paid much less attention to than actual scientific polls and the Governator’s own views on the issue (which explains why they’re letting anyone call in, and not just constituents, who are usually the only people to which attention is paid). But hey, maybe that’s just my inner cynic talking. It can’t hurt to try calling anyway!
